Hans Holtzbecher
Friedrich Emmerich Theodor Johann Daniel Holtzbecher (1861–1935), called Hans, was a German painter and illustrator. Life Holtzbecher was born in Berlin on 22 February 1861. He was a student at the Prussian Academy of Arts from 1877 to 1884 under Paul Thumann, Otto Knille and Max Michael, and made study trips to Holland, Paris and Italy.Beyer, Savoy and Tegethoff, eds. 2021. Retrieved 23 April 2022. He made his debut in Berlin . He painted portraits, nudes and genre scenes. He exhibited at the Berlin Academy of Arts in 1884, 1888, 1889 and 1890. From 1885 to 1890 he was also active as an illustrator, and provided numerous caricatures for the Berlin magazine ''Ulk''. He died in Berlin on 23 June 1935, aged 64. Prussian Academy Of Arts
The Prussian Academy of Arts () was a state arts academy first established in 1694 by prince-elector Frederick III of Electorate of Brandenburg, Brandenburg in Berlin, in personal union Duke Frederick I of Prussia, and later king in Kingdom of Prussia, Prussia. After the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome and the Institut de France, Académies Royales in Paris, the Prussian Academy of Art was the oldest institution of its kind in Europe, with a similar mission to other royal academies of that time, such as the Real Academia Española in Madrid, the Royal Society in London, or the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. Paul Thumann
Friedrich Paul Thumann (5 October 1834, Groß Schacksdorf-Simmersdorf – 19 February 1908, Berlin) was a German illustrator and painter. Life He was the son of a teacher. Originally, he intended to take up a career in science and attended the engineering school in Glogau. His interests soon turned to art and, from 1854 to 1856, he attended the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. Until 1860, he worked in the studios of Julius Hübner in Dresden. After two years in Leipzig, he entered the Weimar Saxon-Grand Ducal Art School, where he studied under Ferdinand Pauwels. He became a professor there in 1866. During the Franco-Prussian War, he was a draftsman at the Prussian Third Army's headquarters. In 1875, he was appointed Professor at the Academy of Arts, Berlin and held that position until 1887. Otto Knille
Otto Knille (10 September 1832, Osnabrück - 7 April 1898, Merano) was a German history painter; associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Biography His father, Justus Georg Knille (1803–1881), was an administrative official in Osnabrück. While attending the gumnasium there, he began to display artistic talent, so he received lessons from a local landscape painter. In 1848, he went to the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied with Karl Ferdinand Sohn, Theodor Hildebrandt and Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow. Later, he had private lessons from the history painter, Emanuel Leutze. While there, he became one of the founding members of the progressive artists' association, Malkasten. In 1853, he went to Paris and worked in the studios of Thomas Couture. He then went to Munich, where he worked with Karl von Piloty until 1858. The Academy of Arts () is a state arts institution in Berlin, Germany. The task of the Academy is to promote art, as well as to advise and support the states of Germany. Ulrich Thieme (31 January 1865 in Leipzig – 25 March 1922 in Leipzig) was a German art historian. He was the son of the industrialist and art collector Alfred Thieme (1830–1906), brother of the publisher Georg Thieme (1830–1906) and grandfather of the painter Peter Flinsch (1920–2010). The ''Benezit Dictionary of Artists'' (in French, ''Bénézit: Dictionnaire des peintres, sculpteurs, dessinateurs et graveurs'') is an extensive publication of bibliographical information on painters, sculptors, designers and engravers created primarily for art museums, auction houses, historians and dealers. It was published by Éditions Gründ in Paris but has been sold to Oxford University Press.
