Hans Eduard Meier
Hans Eduard Meier (30 December 1922, Horgen, Switzerland — 15 July 2014, Horgen ), was a Swiss type designer. He created the neohumanist typeface Syntax at Stempel Foundry, along with Barbedor (1984), Letter (1992) and Lapidar (1995). Awards Linotype Syntax won the Type Directors Club Type Design Competition award in the year 2000 under the text or display type systems category. Bitstream Humanist 531 Cyrillic won awards at the type design contests bukva:raz!, and Kyrillitsa'99, under the text category. Horgen
Horgen is a municipality in the district of Horgen in the canton of Zürich in Switzerland. It is one of the larger towns along the south bank of the Lake of Zurich. On 1 January 2018 the former municipality of Hirzel merged into the municipality of Horgen. History Horgen is also the type-site of Switzerland's middle Neolithic archaeological culture. The settlement there, the so-called ''Horgner Kultur'' ( Horgen culture), produced examples of a type of crude pottery with parallels to the Seine-Oise-Marne culture of northern France. Typeface
A typeface (or font family) is the design of lettering that can include variations in size, weight (e.g. bold), slope (e.g. italic), width (e.g. condensed), and so on. Syntax (typeface)
Syntax comprises a family of fonts designed by Swiss typeface designer Hans Eduard Meier. Originally just a sans-serif font, it was extended with additional serif designs. Syntax Syntax is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Meier in 1968, and released in 1969 by the D. Stempel Schriftgießerei ( type foundry) of Frankfurt am Main. It is believed to be the final face designed and released by D. Stempel for foundry casting. The original drawings were done in 1954; first by writing the letters with a brush, then redrawing their essential linear forms, and finally adding balanced amounts of weight to the skeletons to produce optically monoline letterforms. In the period 1968–1972, Meier worked on additional weights and variations to the Syntax typeface. In 1989, the original foundry metal design was digitized by Adobe, which also expanded the family to include bold and ultrabold weights, resulting in a font family of 4 romans and 1 italic (in lightest weight) fonts. Type Directors Club
The Type Directors Club (TDC) is an international organization devoted to typography and type design, founded in 1946 in New York City. TDC believes that type drives culture, and that culture drives type—and is dedicated to cataloging, showcasing, and exhibiting typography worldwide. The International Typeface Corporation (ITC) was a type manufacturer founded in New York in 1970 by Aaron Burns, Herb Lubalin and Edward Rondthaler. The company was one of the world's first type foundries to have no history in the production of metal type. It is now a wholly owned brand or subsidiary of Monotype Imaging. History The company was founded to design, license and market typefaces for filmsetting and computer set types internationally. The company issued both new designs and revivals of older or classic faces, invariably re-cut to be suitable for digital typesetting use and produced in families of different weights.
