The Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST; , formerly known in English as ''Hanoi University of Technology (HUT)'' until 2010) is the first and largest technical university and the most prestigious university in Vietnam. History After the Viet Minh and its government took control of Hanoi in 1956, the Soviet Union helped North Vietnam to build a new technical university as a frame for university education. The construction took about two years from the grounds of an old campus of Indochina University during the French colonial period. The building was the largest one in Hanoi. The university is the fifth oldest in Vietnam, after Indochina Medical College (1902), University of Indochina (1904), École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine (1925) and Hanoi University of Education (1951). The Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (HUCE; ), formerly known as the ''National University of Civil Engineering'' (NUCE), is a public higher education institution in Vietnam. The university is one of the leading universities and among the top seven engineering universities in Vietnam. Vũ ( 武) or Võ is a common Vietnamese surname that, through genealogy records, has been present in Vietnam since the 9th century. The Vũ surname originates from general Wǔ Hún (武浑) of the Tang Dynasty in Imperial China who was appointed governor of the Annan Protectorate (Northern Vietnam). The Hero of the People's Armed Forces () is an honorary designation of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Criteria The title (and medal) of Hero of the People's Armed Force is awarded to individuals with "exceptionally outstanding achievements in combat, combat service and work, represent the revolutionary heroism in the cause of national liberation, national defense and the protection the people".
