Hanko (; ) is a town in Finland, located in the southern coast of the country. Hanko is situated in the western part of the Uusimaa region. The population of Hanko is approximately . It is the most populous municipality in Finland. Hanko is located west of Helsinki and south-west of Ekenäs. The Port of Hanko is today the 4th largest port in Finland. The skyline of Hanko is dominated by the church and the water tower. Both of them received their current appearance after World War II, as their predecessors were either damaged or destroyed by the Soviet Armed Forces. The Hanko Peninsula (; ) is the southernmost point of mainland Finland. The soil is a sandy moraine, the last tip of the Salpausselkä ridge, and vegetation consists mainly of pine and low shrubs. The peninsula is known for its beautiful archipelago and long sandy beaches. The town of Hanko, Finland, Hanko is situated on the peninsula, as is the Port of Hanko. The Baltic Sea proper is demarcated by a line from the Hanko Peninsula to the northwesternmost point of mainland Estonia. The waters east of this line are considered the Gulf of Finland. Leutnant August Hanko was a German World War I flying ace credited with five aerial victories. Biography August Hanko's origins are unknown. He first served in the German infantry in the early stages of World War I. In 1915, he joined '' Die Fliegertruppen'' (Imperial German Air Service). He first served with ''Feldflieger Abteilung'' (Field Flier Detachment) 38, then with ''Kampfgeschwader'' (Tactical Bomber Wing) 2. Hanko then progressed to fighter pilot's training. Upon graduation, he was posted to his first fighter squadron, '' Jagdstaffel 20'', on 2 November 1916.Franks et al 1993, p. 123. On 24 January 1917, he transferred to ''Jagdstaffel 28''. He scored his first aerial victory on 22 April 1917, downing a Nieuport 17 from No. 1 Squadron RFC in a morning fight. Lieutenant AW Wood, the pilot, was wounded, but survived to be taken prisoner. Hankø
Hankø is an island located in the Oslofjord, Østfold County, Norway. It used to be the property of the Dano-Norwegian king, the site where the king hunted deer. Later an island of retreat, notable visitors are the Norwegian king, Princess Märtha Louise of Norway, and her husband Ari Behn. Their second child, Leah Isadora Behn was born at their estate "Bloksberg" in 2005. Hankø is well known internationally as a venue for the sport of sailing, having hosted several world championships in different yacht classes. It is the host of annual sailing competitions in the summer, drawing international competitors in many classes including the Melges class. The island has many summer cottages, mainly owned by inhabitants from Oslo, the capital of Norway. This is due to the close proximity to the capital.
