Trenton Boykin
Trenton Boykin (born November 13, 1970) is an American college football coach and former player. He is the head football coach at Hampton University. Boykin served as the head football coach at Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee from 2008 to 2009, compiling a record of 4–17. Boykin was a wide receiver at Youngstown State University, where he was a member of three NCAA Division I Football Championship, NCAA Division I–AA national Championship teams. Big South Conference
The Big South Conference is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA's Division I. Originally a non-football conference, the Big South began sponsoring football in 2002 as part of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), and began operating the OVC–Big South Football Association in partnership with the Ohio Valley Conference in 2023. Chris Baker (defensive Lineman)
Christopher Isaiah Baker (born October 8, 1987), nicknamed "Swaggy", is a former American football defensive tackle who played nine seasons in National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Hampton University and signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2009. Baker was also a member of the Miami Dolphins, Hartford Colonials, Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Cincinnati Bengals. College career Baker originally played football collegiately at Pennsylvania State University. Before the 2007 season, he was involved in two separate off-campus fights along with nine of his Penn State teammates. Jamal Brooks
Jamal Benjamin Brooks (born November 9, 1976) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys and St. Louis Rams. He played college football at Hampton University. Early years Brooks attended Granada Hills Charter High School, before moving on to Pasadena City College in 1994. He transferred to Hampton University during his freshman season. In his first year at Hampton, he collected 35 tackles and one sack. As a sophomore, he tallied 46 tackles and one forced fumble. As a junior, he had 26 tackles (4 for loss) and 2 fumble recoveries. As a senior middle linebacker, he posted 75 tackles (3 solo), 12 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and one interception. Charles Holston Williams
Charles Holston Williams (January 25, 1886 – 1978) was an American choreographer and professor of physical education. He was the organizer and first director of the Hampton Institute Creative Dance Group, the first national touring company composed of college students. Williams was also an associate professor and supervisor of the Physical Education Department at the Hampton Institute—now known as Hampton University—in Hampton, Virginia. Early life Williams was born in Lexington, Kentucky, on January 25, 1886. In 1904, he attended high school at Berea College, but the following year Williams transferred to Hampton Institute because the state general assembly had passed the Day Law, stating that blacks and whites could no longer attend the same schools. Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association
The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (originally and through 1950 known as the Colored Intercollegiate Athletic Association — CIAA) is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level, whose member institutions consist entirely of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). 2006 Hampton Pirates Football Team
The 2006 Hampton Pirates football team represented Hampton University as a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in the 2006 NCAA Division I FCS football season. They were led by fifteenth-year head coach Joe Taylor and played their home games at Armstrong Stadium. They finished the season with a 10–2 overall record, won the MEAC championship with a 7–1 record in conference play and earned a berth to the first round of the NCAA Division I playoffs, where they were defeated by New Hampshire. Hampton won the black college football national championship as awarded by three selectors, with North Carolina Central chosen by five other selectors. Joe Taylor (American Football Coach)
Joe Taylor (born May 7, 1950) is an American college athletics administrator and former football coach. He is the athletic director at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia, a position he has held since 2013. Taylor served as the head football coach at Howard University in 1983, Virginia Union from 1984 to 1991, Hampton University from 1992 to 2007, and Florida A&M University from 2008 to 2012, compiling a career college football coaching record of 232–96–4. The ''Pittsburgh Courier'' was an African American weekly newspaper published in Pittsburgh from 1907 until October 22, 1966. By the 1930s, the ''Courier'' was one of the leading black newspapers in the United States. It was acquired in 1965 by John H. Sengstacke, a major black publisher and owner of the '' Chicago Defender''. He re-opened the paper in 1967 as the '' New Pittsburgh Courier'', making it one of his four newspapers for the African American audience. Creation and incorporation The paper was founded by Edwin Nathaniel Harleston, who worked as a guard at the H. J. Heinz Company food packing plant in Pittsburgh. Harleston, a self-published poet, began printing the paper at his own expense in 1907. Generally about two pages, it was primarily a vehicle for Harleston's work.
