Garvin Hamner
Wesley Garvin Hamner (March 18, 1924 – December 15, 2003) was an American professional baseball player. A second baseman and shortstop, he appeared in one season ( 1945) for the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball. His younger brother, Granny Hamner, would become the Phillies' star shortstop of the 1950 "Whiz Kids" National League championship team, while Garvin spent all but two months of his 11-year career in minor league baseball. The two Hamners were teammates briefly on the 1945 Phils. While Granny was the better prospect, and had a 17-year MLB career, the similarity in their names caused a mixup during the Rule 5 draft. The St. Louis Browns had scouted Granny and wanted to draft him off the Phils' Utica Blue Sox minor-league roster. Granville Wilbur "Granny" Hamner (April 26, 1927 – September 12, 1993) was an American professional baseball shortstop and second baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB). Hamner was one of the key players on the "Whiz Kids", the National League (NL) champion Philadelphia Phillies. Career Hamner was born in Richmond, Virginia and graduated from Benedictine High School. His brother Garvin was also an infielder in the big leagues. "Granny" spent years with the Phillies, having come to the club as a 17-year-old during World War II. In 1945, still seventeen, he became the youngest player ever to start an Opening Day game, a record that still stands as of 2022. Millie Hamner is an American educator and politician who served as a member of the Colorado State House of Representatives and a former superintendent of schools for Summit County, Colorado. Career In December 2010, Rep. Christine Scanlan resigned from the House District 56 seat to join the administration of Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper. A committee of HD-56 Democrats selected Hamner to fill the vacancy, and Hamner served the remainder of Scanlan's term. Nora Spencer Hamner (January 6, 1895 – November 17, 1971) was an American public health nurse known for her work fighting tuberculosis in Virginia. She is known as the first public health nurse trained in Virginia. Early life and education Nora Spencer Hamner was born on January 6, 1895, in Buckingham County, Virginia, to Susan (née Henry) and Walter Clifton Hamner. She graduated from Schuyler High School in Schuyler, Virginia in 1906. She graduated from the Memorial Hospital Training School in Richmond in 1914. Nicholas Hamner Cobbs (February 5, 1796 – January 11, 1861) was a minister and evangelist of the Episcopal church who served as the first Bishop of Alabama from 1844 to 1861. Early and family life Nicholas Cobbs was born on February 5, 1796, in Bedford County, Virginia, to the former Susanna Hamner and her planter husband, John Lewis Cobbs. Although his father was not religious, his mother Susanna was a devout Episcopalian. She carried the boy 50 miles on horseback to be baptised at her childhood home in Albemarle County. His paternal grandfather Edmund Cobbs was likewise a planter. He had married Sarah Lewis of Albemarle County and raised a large family.
