Hamilton Gymnasium F.C.
Hamilton Gymnasium Football Club was a 19th-century football club based in Hamilton, in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It was the earliest-founded football club in Scotland to play under Association laws and the first to host Queen's Park F.C. in an association match. History Foundation On 8 May 1866, a public meeting was held in the Lesser Town Hall, Hamilton, at which a society was founded for "field sports, such as cricket, football, rounders, &c". The founders called their society the Hamilton Gymnasium. As Hamilton lacked a public park, the Gymnasium members held a Christmas concert at the Town Hall on 15 December 1866 to raise funds, although one attendee "felt not a little pained to witness the low buffoonery displayed on the occasion". Robert Gardner (footballer)
Robert Gardner (31 March 1847 – 28 February 1887) was an important figure in Scottish football history. He was a match arranger, goalkeeper and team captain for Queen's Park during the 1860s until 1874. A letter of his, dated 1868, is the oldest surviving letter pertaining to association football. He was also the first goalkeeper to captain an international side. Personal details Gardner was born in Glasgow and brought up in the city. Pictures show that he wore a full beard. He was evidently very well educated. According to a contemporary cartoon, he may have relieved the boredom of long periods of inactivity by smoking his pipe on the field. He married Mary Arrol, cousin of the engineer Sir William Arrol, and they had three sons. He found work on Sir William Arrol's Forth Bridge project at South Queensferry. Hamilton Academical Football Club, often known as Hamilton Accies, or The Accies, is a Scottish football club from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire who currently compete in the Scottish Championship, having been relegated from the 2020–21 Scottish Premiership. They were established in 1874 from the school football team at Hamilton Academy and remain the only professional club in British football to have originated from a school team. Hamilton have won the Scottish Challenge Cup twice and have finished runners-up in the Scottish Cup twice. The club currently play their home games at New Douglas Park.
