Hail (horse)
Hail (foaled 27 September 1997) is a thoroughbred racehorse who won the New Zealand Derby in 2000, ridden by Noel Harris. He was bred by Waikanae couple Barry and Hazel Clevely from Valley Court (NZ) (Pompeii Court). Hail was owned by trainer Bruce Marsh and Alistair Cunningham after being purchased as a yearling for $17,000 at the Karaka sales. In seven years of racing, Hail established for himself a reputation of reliability, strength and durability. Although he only won two Group 1 races, he finished in the first four in a further eight, including a fourth in the Wellington Cup under topweight. He also won the 2002 New Zealand St. Leger over 2500m at Trentham Racecourse. He is one of the few New Zealand Derby winners in recent times to have tasted success in Australia, with his win in the Group 2 Sandown Classic in late 2002. Noel Harris
Noel Graham Harris , also known as "Harry" or "NGH", is a former jockey in Thoroughbred racing in New Zealand. He is notable for having ridden 2,167 raceday winners in New Zealand which is the fourth highest total behind Chris Johnson, David Walsh and Lance O'Sullivan and he has won the jockeys' premiership in both New Zealand and Singapore. In 2018 Harris was inducted into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame. In 2025 Harris was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to the thoroughbred racing industry. Riding career Noel Harris was apprenticed at Woodville to his father, John William (Jock) Harris who was a leading jockey both on the flat and over jumps before becoming a horse trainer. Trentham Racecourse
Trentham Racecourse is the main thoroughbred horse racecourse for the Wellington city area in New Zealand. It is located in the suburb of Trentham, New Zealand, Trentham in Upper Hutt, next to Trentham Military Camp. The races are conducted by the Wellington Racing Club. The first race meeting was held there in January 1906. In November 2022 it was reported that a $12.4 million investment from the New Zealand Government's Infrastructure Acceleration Fund would be used in a new 850 home housing development and shopping centre on Trentham Racecourse land. The Wellington Cup is a Group 3 Thoroughbred horse race in New Zealand held annually in January by the Wellington Racing Club at Trentham Racecourse in Trentham, New Zealand, Trentham. Dixieland Band
Dixieland Band (1980 – April 7, 2010) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Background Dixieland Band was bred by Bayard Sharp, a prominent and highly respected Delaware horseman and president of The Blood-Horse Inc. Out of the Sharp-owned multiple stakes winning mare, Mississippi Mud, he was a son of the 20th century's most influential sire, Northern Dancer. Racing career In May 1983, Dixieland Band won the Pennsylvania Derby by a neck from Jacques Tip, establishing himself as a contender for the Belmont Stakes. In the Belmont, he finished unplaced behind Caveat. At age four, he won June's Massachusetts Handicap by two and a quarter lengths from Ward Off Trouble. Sandown Classic
The Zipping Classic, registered as the MRC Sandown Classic is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 2 Thoroughbred horse race held under weight for age conditions over a distance of 2400 metres run at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in late-November/early-December. Prize money is A$750,000. History The event was initially held by the Williamstown Racing Club at the Williamstown Racecourse. After the racecourse grandstand burned to the ground in 1947 the racing club amalgamated with the privately owned Victorian Trotting and Racing Association to become the Melbourne Racing Club and moved the event to Sandown Racecourse.
