Haggerston Baths - Geograph
Haggerston is an area in London, England and is located in the London Borough of Hackney. It is in East London and part of the East End. There is an electoral ward called Haggerston within the borough. Haggerston historically formed part of the Metropolitan Borough of Shoreditch. In 1965, Shoreditch became part of the new London Borough of Hackney. In the 1990s a number of the area's more rundown housing estates were refurbished and some disused public buildings were privately converted into gated communities. In 2010, Haggerston railway station re-opened, a little to the north of the original station. Toponymy In 1086, Haggerston was first recorded in Domesday Book as ''Hergotestane'', a name that may derive from a Saxon farmer called Hærgod, who either had a ‘ton’ (farmstead) here or a stone that marked the boundary of his land. Hackney South And Shoreditch (UK Parliament Constituency)
Hackney South and Shoreditch is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2005 by Meg Hillier of Labour Co-op. History The seat was created in February 1974 from the former seat of Shoreditch and Finsbury. Ronald Brown was elected in 1974 as a representative of the Labour Party but defected from the Opposition to join the fledgling Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1981, at a time when Labour wished for Common Market withdrawal and the removal of keeping a nuclear deterrent during the Cold War. Brown held the seat as an SDP member until 1983, when he was defeated by Labour Party candidate Brian Sedgemore. Kray Twins
Ronald Kray (24 October 193320 March 1995) and Reginald Kray (24 October 19331 October 2000) were English gangsters or organised crime figures and identical twin brothers from Haggerston who were prominent from the late 1950s until their arrest in 1968. Their gang, known as the Firm, was based in Bethnal Green, where the Kray twins lived. They were involved in murder, armed robbery, arson, protection rackets, gambling and assaults. At their peak in the 1960s, they gained a certain measure of celebrity status by mixing with prominent members of London society, being photographed by David Bailey and interviewed on television. The Krays were arrested on 8 May 1968 and convicted in 1969 as a result of the efforts of detectives led by Detective Superintendent Leonard "Nipper" Read. Each was sentenced to life imprisonment. Old Street
Old Street is a street in inner north-east Central London, England that runs west to east from Goswell Road in Clerkenwell, in the London Borough of Islington, via St Luke's and Old Street Roundabout, to the crossroads where it meets Shoreditch High Street (south), Kingsland Road (north) and Hackney Road (east) in Shoreditch in the London Borough of Hackney. It has London Underground station Old Street on the Northern line which has other platforms for National Rail's Northern City Line. Its west half is inside London's Congestion Charging Zone. East London Tech City (also known as Tech City and Silicon Roundabout) is a technology cluster of high-tech companies located in East London, United Kingdom. Its main area lies broadly between St Luke's and Hackney Road, with an accelerator space for spinout companies at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. A cluster of web businesses initially developed around the Old Street Roundabout in 2008. The area had historically been relatively poor compared to the City of London, and was known as the City Fringe. Haggerston Baths
Haggerston Baths is a former public bath in Haggerston, London. It was opened in 1904 and were built at a cost of £60,000. There was a single pool, 91 Slipper Bathtub, slipper baths and a 60 stall wash house. The Grade II listed Haggerston Pool was designed by Alfred Cross. It was closed in 2000 with an uncertain future. In June 2009 after a long community campaign, a £5m grant was announced from the Department for Children, Schools and Families to refurbish and re-open the pool. The building would also contain community facilities and a GP surgery. Heavily involved in the re-opening of the pool was Michael Gallie, who was instrumental in surveying the building, creating 3D model sketches and more. Due to the 2009 financial downturn, Hackney Borough Council had to remove funding for the re-opening of the baths. Bethnal Green is an area in London, England, and is located in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is in east London and part of the East End of London, East End. The area emerged from the small settlement which developed around the common land, Green, much of which survives today as Bethnal Green Gardens, beside Cambridge Heath Road. Columbia Road
Columbia Road is a street in Washington, D.C., that forks from Connecticut Avenue north of Dupont Circle, and branches north and east through 16th Street to the McMillan Reservoir. Hackney Road
Hackney Road is a London arterial route running from St Leonard's, Shoreditch, Shoreditch Church in London Borough of Hackney to Cambridge Heath in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The route runs along the northern edge of Bethnal Green and southern edge of Haggerston. It lies close to the border between the boroughs of London Boroughs of Hackney and Tower Hamlets. Muktar Said Ibrahim
Muktar Said Ibrahim (born 24 January 1978), also known as Muktar Mohammed Said, is an Eritrean-British terrorist. He is serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 40 years after being found guilty of involvement in the attempted 21 July attacks on London's public transport system in 2005. He attempted to detonate a device on a London bus in Haggerston and was arrested sharing an apartment with Ramzi Mohammed on 29 July 2005. The arrest culminated in Ramzi and Ibrahim standing near-naked on their balcony to avoid tear gas that police had used. He was originally from Asmara, and arrived in the UK as a child dependent of asylum seekers in 1990, and was granted residency in 1992. 21 July 2005 London Bombings
On 21 July 2005, four attempted bomb attacks by four Islamism, Islamist extremists disrupted part of London's public transport system as a follow-up attack to the 7 July 2005 London bombings two weeks earlier. The explosions occurred around midday at Shepherd's Bush tube station (Hammersmith and City Line), Shepherd's Bush, Warren Street tube station, Warren Street and Oval tube station, Oval stations on the London Underground, and on London Buses route 26 in Haggerston. A fifth bomber dumped his device without attempting to set it off. Connecting lines and stations were closed and evacuated. Metropolitan Police later said the intention was to cause large-scale loss of life, but only the detonators of the bombs exploded, probably causing the popping sounds reported by witnesses, and a person having a minor asthma attack was the only reported injury.
