Hadiya Khalaf Abbas
Hadiya Khalaf Abbas (, 1958 – 13 November 2021) was a Syrian politician who served as the Speaker of the People's Council of Syria from June 2016 to July 2017. She was the only woman to have held the post. Biography and career Abbas was born in Deir ez-Zor Governorate in 1958 and got a doctorate in agricultural engineering from the University of Aleppo. She was also professor at the Al-Furat University. After the 2016 Syrian parliamentary election, Abbas was elected Speaker of the People's Council of Syrian in the first session of the chamber on 6 June 2016, becoming the first woman to reach this office. She won uncontested. On 20 July 2017, Syria's Parliament issued a resolution discharging Abbas from her post as Speaker, with a majority of member votes. Syria TV () is a Syrian television network owned and operated by the Qatari Fadaat Media network. Parliamentary elections were held in Syria to elect the People's Council of Syria, People's Council on 13 April 2016, electing members for the List of members of the Parliament of Syria, 2016–2020, 2016–2020 parliamentary term. Background Amidst nearly five years of civil war and ensuing negotiations for a ceasefire, following the Russian military intervention in the Syrian Civil War and Syrian Arab Army gains, President Bashar al-Assad called the election. Al-Furat University
Al-Furat University () is a Syrian public university founded in 2006. It is located mainly in Deir ez-Zor, which hosts the medical school, and has campuses in other cities in Syria. Before 2011 it was the smallest public university in Syria. The university runs its own open access journal. The responsible authority for the campus in Deir ez-Zor is the Ministry of Higher Education (Syria). Before 2011 the university taught undergraduate and post-graduated medicine to an internationally recognised standard. In 2014 Islamic State imposed behavioural conditions on the staff and students of the university's Raqqa campus to remain open. In January 2015 they forced the campus to close.
