Haavard Martinsen
Haavard Martinsen (6 February 1879 – 2 August 1967) was a Norwegian chemist and industrial leader. He was born in Nedre Eiker to Gustav Martinsen and Johanna Jeremiassen. He graduated as chemist from the University of Dresden in 1902. From 1918 to 1949 he was director of the mill Bjølsen Valsemølle. He served as mayor of Kristiania from 1920 to 1922. Nedre Eiker
Nedre Eiker was a municipality in Buskerud county, Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Eiker. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Mjøndalen. The old municipality of Eiker was divided into ''Nedre Eiker'' (lower Eiker) and ''Øvre Eiker'' (upper) on 1 July 1885. General information Name The Old Norse form of the name was ''Eikjar''. The name is the plural form of ''eiki'' which means "oak wood". The meaning of ''Nedre Eiker'' is "(the) lower (part of) Eiker". (The municipality of Eiker was divided in 1885.) Coat-of-arms The coat-of-arms was granted on 26 June 1970. The arms show three gold-colored oak leaves on a red background. The arms are canting because the meaning of the name (Eik) comes from the word for oak. Carl Jeppesen
Carl Jeppesen (16 March 1858 – 26 January 1930) was a Danish-born Norwegian worker, newspaper editor and politician. He edited the newspaper '' Social-Demokraten'' from 1887 to 1892, and from 1906 to 1912. He was among the founders of the Norwegian Labour Party, and served as chairman for two periods, from 1890 to 1892, and from 1894 to 1897. He was Mayor of Kristiania from 1917 to 1919. Personal life Jeppesen was born in Copenhagen as the son of Jens Jeppesen and Marie Fredrikke Petrine Tauer. He grew up in Copenhagen with adoptive parents, having been adopted as a one-year-old child. He married Hulda Johanne Schmidt in 1878. He died in Oslo in 1930. Career Jeppesen started working as a cigar riddler. After periods of unemployment he settled in Kristiania in 1878, working as brushmaker.
