Haapsalu Air Base
Haapsalu Air Base or Kiltsi Airfield () is a disused military airfield in Estonia, located southwest of Haapsalu. It was first built by the Soviets in 1939.https://forgottenairfields.comestonia/laane/haapsalu-closed-s275.html During the ESSR, Soviet era, it was an interceptor aircraft base—modern in its day—with several covered aircraft shelters. It was home to the 425th Fighter Aviation Regiment PVO (425 IAP), part of the 14th Air Defence Division, 6th Independent Air Defence Army, Air Defence Forces, between 1970 and 1992, flying up to 38 Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23 (ASCC: Flogger) aircraft in 1991. The airfield has been abandoned since the Soviet army left it in the early 1990s. After independence, Estonian authorities assigned the ICAO code EEHU but this has since been withdrawn, indicating a lack of intentions to reactivate the aerodrome, neither for civilian nor military use. Haapsalu () is a seaside resort town located on the west coast of Estonia. It is the administrative centre of Lääne County, and on 1 January 2020 it had a population of 9,375. History The name ''Haapsalu'' derives from the Estonian words ''haab'' 'aspen' and ''salu'' in the archaic sense '(forested) island' (now 'grove'). The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23 (; NATO reporting name: Flogger) is a variable-sweep wing, variable-geometry fighter aircraft, designed by the Mikoyan, Mikoyan-Gurevich OKB, design bureau in the Soviet Union. It is a third-generation jet fighter, alongside similar Soviet aircraft such as the Sukhoi Su-17, Su-17 "Fitter". It was the first Soviet fighter to field a look-down/shoot-down radar, the RP-23 Sapfir, and one of the first to be armed with beyond-visual-range missiles. Production started in 1969 and reached large numbers with over 5,000 aircraft built, making it the most produced variable-sweep wing aircraft in history.
