The HSBC Building is a historical building in George Town, Penang, George Town within the States and federal territories of Malaysia, Malaysian state of Penang. Opened in 1951, the office building, situated at Downing Street, George Town, Downing Street within the George Town Central Business District, Penang, city's Central Business District (CBD), houses the Penang branch of HSBC. Henry Gurney
Sir Henry Lovell Goldsworthy Gurney (27 June 1898 – 6 October 1951) was a British colonial administrator who served in various posts throughout the British Empire. Gurney was killed by communist insurgents during the Malayan Emergency, while serving as high commissioner in the Federation of Malaya. Career As a boy, Gurney was educated at Winchester College. During World War I, he joined the British Army, and served with the King's Royal Rifle Corps from 1917 to 1920. India House, Penang
The India House is a historical building in George Town within the Malaysian state of Penang. It is located at Beach Street, within the city's Central Business District. History In the early 20th century, the land of the building was used by the Huttenbach Brothers & Co. for their business. The present building was constructed in 1937. During the Japanese occupation of Malaya in World War II, the building was left unoccupied. Following the destruction of the earlier George Town Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation headquarters in World War II, the India House served as the location of the bank until the bank returned to the reconstructed HSBC building in 1951. The India House was later used by the United States Information Service until the 1970s.
