HMAS HDML 1321
HMAS ''HDML 1321'', also known as ''Rushcutter'' was a 58-ton Harbour Defence Motor Launch of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Built by Purdon & Featherstone, Battery Point, Hobart, Tasmania and commissioned into the RAN on 11 November 1943, being the first Australian-built HDML to be commissioned and the last HDML in RAN service. She was assigned to Z Special Unit and delivered commandos for the 1945 ill-fated raid on Muschu Island. She was later reclassified as a Seaward Defence Boat and put into reserve after the war. Operation Copper
Operation Copper was carried out by the Allied commando unit Z Special Unit, during World War II. The objective of the mission was to investigate the Japanese defences on Muschu Island, capture a Japanese officer for interrogation and discover the location of two naval guns on the island that covered the approaches to Wewak Harbour. Eight commandos were landed as part of the operation; only one survived. Background Prelude Operation Copper was one of the last Z Special operations in New Guinea. The Australian Navy Cadets (ANC) is a voluntary youth organisation owned and sponsored by the Royal Australian Navy. Together with the Australian Air Force Cadets and Australian Army Cadets, it forms the Australian Defence Force Cadets. It hosts over 91 units. Seaward Defence Boat
The Ford-class seaward defence boats were built for the Royal Navy (with three built for the South African Navy) in the 1950s. Development They were designed to detect and attack hostile submarines, including midget submarines in inshore waters such as the approaches to large ports.Gardiner and Chumbley 1995, p. 536.Blackman 1971, p. 369. They were powered by diesel engines and were planned to be armed with a single barreled Squid anti-submarine mortar. Z Special Unit () was a joint Allied special forces unit formed during the Second World War to operate behind Japanese lines in South East Asia. Predominantly Australian, Z Special Unit was a specialist reconnaissance and sabotage unit that included British, Dutch, New Zealand, Timorese and Indonesian members, predominantly operating on Borneo and the islands of the former Dutch East Indies.Horner 1989, p. 26 The unit carried out a total of 81 covert operations in the South West Pacific theatre, with parties inserted by parachute or submarine to provide intelligence and conduct guerrilla warfare.
