Idrottsföreningen Saab was a Swedish sports club from Linköping, Östergötland County founded in 1941 by people working at Saab and most known for its association football and handball teams. They took part in the 1973 Allsvenskan. In 1981, IF Saab merged with BK Derby to form Linköpings FF. Besides football, the club also had active sections for the sports badminton, bandy, table tennis, bowling, boxing, archery, bicycle racing, athletics, gymnastics, handball, company sports, skiing, orienteering, tennis, and varpa. Team Handball
Handball (also known as team handball, European handball, Olympic handball or indoor handball) is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outcourt players and a Handball goalkeeper, goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the opposing team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins. Modern handball is played on a court of , with a goal in the middle of each end. Field handball (also known as outdoor handball or grass handball) is a soccer-like outdoor predecessor of what is now (indoor) handball. It was played at the Olympics once, at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. It was dominated by Germany, winning all World Championships (except when banned in 1948), with German teams (two of them post-war) never been beaten or tied by a non-German squad. The sport is played on a grass field (similar to an association football field, using the same goals) between long, wide. The field has two parallel lines from the goal line, which divide the field into 3 sections; each section can have up to 6 players of each team. The goal area is a semicircular line with a radius, and the penalty mark at from the goal. The goal is the same as in soccer, wide and high. The 1967–68 Allsvenskan was the 34th season of the top division of Swedish handball. 10 teams competed in the league. A playoffs at the end of the season to determine the champions was introduced this season. SoIK Hellas won the regular season, but IF Saab won the playoffs and claimed their first Swedish title. Handbollsligan ''(literally, "The Handball league")'' is the highest league in the league system of Swedish handball, and comprises the top 14 Swedish handball teams. The first season began in 1931–32. The season ends with a playoff. Structure The season starts in September with a regular season comprising 14 teams meeting each other twice. A total of 26 rounds. The eight best teams after the regular season qualifies for the play-off. The 14th team is relegated, and the 11th, 12th and 13th team plays matches against the second, third and fourth from Allsvenskan to qualify for next season's Handbollsligan. The season ends with the finals in the beginning of May and the winning team qualifies directly to EHF European League and the losing team qualifies for the EHF European Cup. Varpa
Varpa is an outdoor game of physical skill that allegedly dates back to the Viking Age and survived in Gotland. It is similar to boules and horseshoes but is played with a flat and heavy object called a "varpa" instead of balls. Varpas used to be well-shaped stones, but nowadays, aluminium is more popular. A varpa can weigh between . The object of the game is to throw the varpa as close to a stick as possible. The stick is away for women and away for men. The game can be played individually or in teams. No official nationally sponsored varpa teams exist; however, unofficial leagues are growing in popularity among youth in suburban areas of Sweden and Norway. "Varpa" is an old word which simply means "to throw". Varpa is one of the disciplines at the annual Stånga Games (''Stångaspelen'').
