The Rights and Freedoms Party (, , abbreviated HAK-PAR) is a Kurdish nationalist political party in Turkey. Advocating federalism as a means of increasing Kurdish autonomy in the south-east of the country, the party split from the Democratic People's Party (DEHAP) in 2002. The party's head office is in Diyarbakır. Until his death in October 2015, the party was headed by Fehmi Demir. Fehmi Demir
Fehmi Demir (2 January 1957 – 25 October 2015) was a Turkish politician of Kurdish origin who served as the leader of the Rights and Freedoms Party (HAK-PAR) from October 2014 until his death a year later in October 2015. He advocated a federalist agenda, in favour of splitting Turkey into several federal states in order to give the Kurdish dominated regions more political autonomy. On 25 October 2015, just six days before the November 2015 general election, Demir was killed in a traffic accident while travelling on a motorway through Tarsus in Mersin Province. His party had fielded candidates in 78 electoral districts for the election, while Demir had been the HAK-PAR's first-preference candidate in Diyarbakır. Local elections (formal: local authority general elections, Turkish: ''Mahalli İdareler Genel Seçimi'' or simply ''Yerel Seçimleri'') were held in Turkey on 30 March 2014, with some repeated on 1 June 2014. Kemal Burkay (1937, Kızılkale, Mazgirt, Tunceli) is a Kurdish writer and politician. Biography He attended his primary education in Tunceli and graduated from Ankara University, Law School in 1960. Political career In 1965 he joined the Workers' Party of Turkey. Due to an article published in 1966, he was jailed. Following the coup d'état in 1971 most of the Kurds who were politically involved were detained. Burkay was imprisoned for one year, and after a new warrant for his arrest was issued, Burkay went into exile to Germany in 1972. Abdülmelik Fırat
Abdülmelik Fırat (1934, Hınıs – 29 September 2009, Ankara) was a prominent Turkish-Kurds, Kurdish politician. He was the grandson of Sheikh Said, leader of the 1925 Sheikh Said rebellion. Early life and education His grandfather Sheikh Said was a Sheikh of the Sufism, Sufi Naqshbandi order, which had great influence in the Kurdish population in Turkey. Following the defeat of the rebellion led by Sheikh Said and the subsequent execution of him, his surviving relatives were exiled. Several returned in 1929, when the law allowed it. He was born in 1934 in Erzurum and attended school in Diyarbakır, Diyarbakir. Career Fırat joined the Democrat Party (Turkey, historical), Democrat Party (DP), and was elected to parliament in 1957.
