The Eurocopter, later Airbus Helicopters AS550 Fennec (now H125M) and AS555 Fennec 2 are lightweight, multipurpose military helicopters manufactured by Eurocopter Group (now Airbus Helicopters). Based on the AS350 Ecureuil and AS355 Ecureuil 2 series, they are named after the fennec fox. The armed versions of the AS550 and AS555 can be fitted with coaxial weapons, rockets, torpedoes and various other munitions. Fennec Fox
The fennec fox (''Vulpes zerda'') is a small fox native to the deserts of North Africa, ranging from Western Sahara and Mauritania to the Sinai Peninsula. Its most distinctive feature is its unusually large ears, which serve to dissipate heat and listen for underground prey. The fennec is the smallest fox species. Its coat, ears, and kidney functions have Xerocole, adapted to the desert environment with high temperatures and little water. The fennec fox mainly eats insects, small mammals and birds. It has a life span of up to 14 years in captivity and about 10 years in the wild. Pups are preyed upon by the Pharaoh eagle-owl; both adults and pups may possibly fall prey to jackals and striped hyenas. Squadron 724 () is a Royal Danish Air Force helicopter squadron, based at Karup Air Base in central Jutland. The squadron was officially established on 7 August 2003, following the disbandment and reorganization of the Danish army's Royal Danish Army Air Corps (, HFT). The name "" continued to be used until August 2005. The squadron consist of 12 AS 550 Fennec. Under the Danish Defence agreement 2005-09, Squadron 724 was slated for disbandment.
