H. K. Narayana
H. K. Narayana was a well-known singer and music composer from Karnataka, India. He was an icon of Light music and played an important role in popularizing the genre of Sugama Sangeetha in Kannada. ''Nadavirada Baduke'' by Nissar Ahmed, ''Brundavanake Haalanu Maaralu'' by Kuvempu and ''Shubha Nudiye Shakunada Hakki'' by ''D. R. Bendre'' are some of his well-known numbers. He is popular through ''Navasuma'' and ''Geetaraadhana'' in Radio. Early life Narayana was born in 1934 at Holenarasipura in Hassan district of Karnataka to Keshavayya and Sannamma. Influenced by his father, who was a musician himself, Narayana developed interest in music early in his life and started learning Violin at a young age of six. Sugama Sangeetha
Sugama Sangeetha, a variety of Bhavageethe, is an Indian musical genre in which poetry in the Kannada language is set to music. It gained recognition with the work of P. Kalinga Rao in the mid -20th century. Mysore Ananthaswamy and C. Aswath developed the form further in the 1960s and 1970s. Origin and development It is unclear when exactly Bhavageethe started but in 1920s and 30s there were many attempts to set tunes to poetry. By the 1950s it started taking a more defined shape and a highly talented musician P. Kalinga Rao was instrumental in spreading this art form. He set tunes to the poems of many famous Navodaya poets, and gave performances on All India Radio as well as public gatherings. Sripadaraja
Sripadaraja (; ) or Sripadaraya, also known by his pontifical name Lakshminarayana Tirtha, was a Hindu Dvaita philosopher, scholar and composer and the pontiff of the Madhvacharya mutt at Mulbagal. He is widely considered the founder of Haridasa movement along with Narahari Tirtha. He has influenced both Carnatic music and Hindustani music through his compositions. Purandara Dasa
Purandara Dasa (IAST: Purandara Dāsa; (1470 – 1564) was a composer, singer and a Haridasa philosopher from present-day Karnataka, India. He was a follower of Madhwacharya, Madhvacharya's Dwaitha, Dvaita philosophy. He was one of the chief founding proponents that shaped modern Carnatic music. In honor of his contributions to Carnatic music, he is referred to as the ''Pitamaha'' (''lit''. "grandsire") of Carnatic music. According to a legend, he is considered as an incarnation of Narada. Naraharitirtha
Narahari Tirtha ( 1243 - 1333) was a Dvaita philosopher, scholar, statesman and one of the disciples of Madhvacharya. He is considered to be the progenitor of the Haridasa movement along with Sripadaraja. Though only two of his scholarly works are extant, they are characterised by their verbosity and lack of digressions. A few songs of his survive under the pen name ''Raghukulatilaka''. As a minister of considerable influence to the Eastern Ganga rulers and later as the pontiff of the Madhvacharya matha, Narahari converted the Simhachalam temple into an educational establishment of renown and a religious centre for Vaishnavism. Vidyabhushana
Vidyabhushana is a vocalist from Karnataka. He sings devotional songs, chiefly Haridasa compositions, and carnatic classical music. He has many albums to his credit, mainly devotional songs in Kannada, Tulu and has given concerts all over the world. His first album was titled "Dasara Padagalu" and the 100th titled "Tanu Ninnadu Jivana Ninnadu". Performing for more than 40 years, he has traveled to many countries including a tour across the United States in 1999., He was honoured with the title of Sangeetha Vidya Nidhi in 1994. Shimoga Subbanna or Shivamogga Subbanna (born as G. Subramanya, 14 December 1938 – 11 August 2022) was an Indian Sugama Sangeetha(Light Music) playback singer in the Kannada language. He received a national award for singing for the song ''Kaadu Kudure Odi Banditta'' in the film '' Kaadu Kudure''. He was the first Kannadiga to win National Award for playback singing. Gamaka (music)
Gamaka (Hindi: / Urdu: ) (also spelled gamakam) refer to ornamentation that is used in the performance of North and South Indian classical music. Gamaka can be understood as embellishment done on a note or between two notes. Present-day Carnatic music uses at least fifteen different kinds of ornamentation. Gamaka is any graceful turn, curve or cornering touch given to a single note or a group of notes, which adds emphasis to each raga's individuality.
