General (Finland)
General ( fi, Kenraali) is the highest officer's rank in Finland. It is held exclusively by the Chief of Defence (Finland), Chief of Defence during peacetime. General is comparable to Ranks and insignia of NATO armies officers, Ranks of NATO armies officers as OF-9. Historically, a General's branch of service could be indicated in the rank. So far Finland has had seventeen of (General of Infantry), a few of (Jägergeneral), two of (General of Cavalry) and one (General of Artillery). Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim himself was the other one of the two Generals of Cavalry before his promotion to Field marshal (Finland), Field Marshal. The Chief of Defence ( fi, Puolustusvoimain komentaja, sv, Kommendören för försvarsmakten ) is the Chief of Defence and commander of the Finnish Defence Forces, under the authority of the President of Finland. The Chief of Defence commands the Finnish Army, the Finnish Air Force, the Finnish Navy and is assisted by the Defence Command. He is the highest-ranking officer of the forces (Admiral or General) and his deputy is the Chief of Staff of the Defence Command ( fi, pääesikunnan päällikkö). Officers (OF 1–10) Warrant officers (WO1–5) Warrant officers (WOs) and chief warrant officers (CWOs) in the US military rank below officers but above officer candidates and enlisted servicemen. Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim
Baron Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (, ; 4 June 1867 – 27 January 1951) was a Finnish military leader and statesman. He served as the military leader of the Whites in the Finnish Civil War of 1918, as Regent of Finland (1918–1919), as commander-in-chief of Finland's defence forces during the period of World War II (1939–1945), as Marshal of Finland (1942–), and as the sixth president of Finland (1944–1946). The Russian Empire dominated the Grand Duchy of Finland before 1917, and Mannerheim made a career in the Imperial Russian Army, rising by 1917 to the rank of lieutenant general. He had a prominent place in the ceremonies for Emperor Nicholas II's coronation in 1896 and later had several private meetings with the Tsar. In Finnish Defence Forces Field Marshal ( fi, sotamarsalkka, lit=War Marshal, sv, fältmarskalk) is officially not an active military rank but an honorary rank that can be bestowed upon 'especially distinguished generals'. So far the only holder of this title has been Baron Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, then Chairman of the Defence Council, who received it on 19 May 1933 by the decision of the State Council. Baron Gustaf Mannerheim (1867–1951) served as Regent 1918–1919 and President of the Republic 1944–1946. Lieutenant General Mannerheim had commanded the White Army in the Finnish Civil War in 1918, and his promotion to field marshal had already been suggested in 1928, the 10th anniversary of the end of the War. The Military ranks of Finland are the military insignia used by the Finnish Defence Forces. The ranks incorporates features from Swedish, German, and Russian armed forces. In addition, the system has some typically Finnish characteristics that are mostly due to the personnel structure of the Finnish Defence Forces. The ranks have official names in Finnish and Swedish languages and official English translations.
