Günter Schmidt
Günter E. W. Schmidt (born 10 May 1926 in Lübeck; died 23 December 2016 in Deutsch Evern) was a German arachnologist and author of a standard German work on tarantulas, ''Die Vogelspinnen'' ("bird-eating spiders"). He has been described as one of the fathers of German arachnology. Tarantula
Tarantulas comprise a group of large and often hairy spiders of the family Theraphosidae. , 1,100 species have been identified, with 166 genera. ''Cyriopagopus schmidti'' is a species of spider in the family Theraphosidae (tarantulas), found in China and Vietnam. It is one of a number of species known as "Chinese bird spider" and "Chinese earth tiger". ''Haplopelma huwenum'' was synonymized with this species in 2008. Spiders under this name and its synonyms have been shown to produce toxins called huwentoxins. ''Aphonopelma chalcodes'', commonly known as the western desert tarantula, desert blonde tarantula, Arizona blonde tarantula or Mexican blonde tarantula, is a species of spider belonging to the family Theraphosidae. ''Cyrtopholis'' is a genus of tarantulas that was first described by Eugène Louis Simon in 1892. Diagnosis This genus can be distinguished by being found in the Caribbean, and by the presence of claviform stridulatory hairs on the trochanter of the pedipalps and the legs I.
