Gwynedd General Map
Gwynedd (; ) is a county and preserved county (latter with differing boundaries; includes the Isle of Anglesey) in the north-west of Wales. It shares borders with Powys, Conwy County Borough, Denbighshire, Anglesey over the Menai Strait, and Ceredigion over the River Dyfi. The scenic Llŷn Peninsula and most of Snowdonia National Park are in Gwynedd. Bangor is the home of Bangor University. As a local government area, it is the second largest in Wales in terms of land area and also one of the most sparsely populated. A majority of the population is Welsh-speaking. ''Gwynedd'' also refers to being one of the preserved counties of Wales, covering the two local government areas of Gwynedd and Anglesey. Named after the old Kingdom of Gwynedd, both culturally and historically, ''Gwynedd'' can also be used for most of North Wales, such as the area that was policed by the Gwynedd Constabulary. Hywel Williams
Hywel Williams (born 1953) is a Welsh Plaid Cymru politician serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Arfon, previously Caernarfon, since 2001. He announced his intention to retire in 2022. Early life Williams was born in Pwllheli in 1953, and received his education at Ysgol Troed yr Allt, Pwllheli Grammar School and then Ysgol Glan y Môr. He studied Psychology at the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire (now Cardiff University) before qualifying as a social worker at University College of North Wales (now Bangor University) in 1977/78. Sam Rowlands
Sam Rowlands is a British politician serving as Shadow Minister for Local Government in the Welsh Parliament. A member of the Conservative and Unionist Party, he has been a Member of the Welsh Parliament for the North Wales Electoral Region since the 2021 Senedd election. Prior to his election to the Senedd, Sam was a member of Conwy County Borough Council and Abergele Town Council, being first elected in the 2008 Welsh Local Government Elections. He served as the Mayor of Abergele from 2015-2016 and the Leader of Conwy County Borough Council from June 2019 until May 2021. Carolyn Thomas
Carolyn Thomas (born 1965) is a Welsh Labour Party politician who has been a Member of the Senedd (MS) for North Wales since the 2021 Senedd election. Early career and election Before being elected to the Senedd, Thomas worked as a postal worker until 2020 and was a member of the Communication Workers Union (CWU). In 2008, she was elected to Flintshire County Council as an independent representing Treuddyn before joining Labour in 2015. In 2019, Thomas became Deputy Leader of the council. Whilst Deputy Leader, Thomas delivered a petition to the Senedd, calling for buses to be run 'for people, not profit'. Mabon Ap Gwynfor
Rhodri Mabon ap Gwynfor is a Welsh Plaid Cymru politician who has been Member of the Senedd (MS) for Dwyfor Meirionnydd since 2021. Career Ap Gwynfor was elected as a town councillor in Aberystwyth Town Council in 2004. He was later elected as a Denbighshire county Councillor for Llandrillo in 2017, before resigning in August 2021. In his resignation letter, he said it was impossible to "effectively" fulfil roles as a councillor and Senedd Member. Siân Gwenllian
Siân Gwenllian is a Welsh Plaid Cymru politician who has represented the constituency of Arfon in the Senedd since 2016. She currently holds the seat with a majority of 8,642 votes. Since the 2021 Senedd election, Gwenllian has been Plaid Cymru's spokesperson for the Welsh Language, Education, Children and Young People. She is also the Chief Whip and Deputy Leader of Plaid Cymru's shadow cabinet. This is a list of subdivisions of Wales by the percentage of those professing some skills in the Welsh language in the 2011 UK census. The census did not record Welsh-speakers living outside Wales. The census determined that 18.56% of the population could speak Welsh and 14.57% could speak, read and write in the language. The most recent Annual Population Survey (June 2020), as conducted by the Office for National Statistics, suggests that 28.6% of people in Wales aged three and over were able to speak Welsh. Bangor (; ) is a cathedral city and community in Gwynedd, North Wales. It is the oldest city in Wales. Historically part of Caernarfonshire, it had a population of 18,322 in 2019, according to the Office for National Statistics. ONS codes are geocodes maintained by the United Kingdom's Office for National Statistics to represent a wide range of geographical areas of the UK, for use in tabulating census and other statistical data. These codes are also known as GSS codes, where GSS refers to the '' Government Statistical Service'' of which ONS is part. Welsh Language
Welsh ( or ) is a Celtic language of the Brittonic subgroup that is native to the Welsh people. Welsh is spoken natively in Wales, by some in England, and in Y Wladfa (the Welsh colony in Chubut Province, Argentina). Historically, it has also been known in English as "British", "Cambrian", "Cambric" and "Cymric". The Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 gave the Welsh language official status in Wales. Both the Welsh and English languages are ''de jure'' official languages of the Welsh Parliament, the Senedd.
