Gustavo Lagos
Gustavo Lagos Cruz-Coke is a Chilean academic who study the Chilean mining industry and in particular copper mining in the country. He is one of the founders of Centro de Estudios del Cobre y la Minería (CESCO) established in 1986. Lagos studied originally mining engineering in the University of Chile from 1968 to 1973. He has also been mentioned as a "pioneer" of the studies of lithium mining in Chile by ''El Mostrador'' with particular reference to his 1986 book ''El litio, un nuevo recurso para Chile''. He obtained a doctorate from the University of Leeds where he carried out research in the team led by M. Stanley Whittingham. He has influenced Estrategia Nacional del Litio, Chile's national policy on the lithium industry announced by President Gabriel Boric in 2023. Mining In Chile
The mining sector in Chile has historically been and continues to be one of the pillars of the Chilean economy. Mining in Chile is concentrated in 14 mining districts, all of them in the northern half of the country and in particular in the Norte Grande region spanning most of the Atacama Desert. Chile was, in 2024, the world's largest producer of copper, iodine and rhenium, the second largest producer of lithium, the third largest producer of molybdenum, the seventh largest producer of silver, and salt, the eighth largest producer of potash, the thirteenth producer of sulfur and the fourteenth producer of iron ore in the world. Radio Bío-Bío is a Chilean radio station with broad coverage in Chile. It covers news, sports, music, economics, and international relations. The station was founded in 1966 in Concepción. Copper Mining In Chile
Chile is the world's largest producer of copper and has been so uninterruptedly since 1983. This activity provides a substantial part of the Chilean state's revenue: slightly less than 6% in 2020, with state-owned copper company Codelco alone generating 2.6% of state revenue. Mining of copper in Chile is done chiefly on giant low-grade porphyry copper deposits which are primarily mined by the following companies; Codelco, BHP, Antofagasta Minerals, Anglo American plc, Anglo American and Glencore. Together these companies stood for 83.6% of the copper output in Chile in 2019 and many copper mining companies are joint ventures involving one at least one of these.
