Chandulal Shah
Chandulal Jesangbhai Shah (13 April 1898 – 25 November 1975) was a famous director, producer and screenwriter of Indian films, who founded Ranjit Studios in 1929. Early life Shah was born in 1898 in Jamnagar, Gujarat, British India. He studied at Sydenham College in Bombay (now Mumbai) and got a job at the Bombay Stock Exchange in 1924. While waiting to get a job he helped his brother, J. D. Shah, who was a writer for mythological films. He was called by the "Laxmi Film Company" to direct a film ''Vimla'' in 1925 as its director Manilal Joshi was bedridden. Chandulal Shah not only directed the film but also went on to do two more films for the company, ''Panch Danda'' (1925) and ''Madhav Kam Kundala'' (1926) before returning to the Stock Exchange. Gohar Khayyam Mamajiwala (19 November 1910 – 28 September 1985), also known as Miss Gohar, was an Indian singer, actress, producer and studio owner. Early life She was born into a Dawoodi Bohra family. Gohar's father's business almost collapsed and the family funds were seriously depleting when a family friend, Homi Master, working at the time as a director for Kohinoor Films, suggested that Gohar take up acting as a career. Her parents agreed. Career Gohar started her career at the age of sixteen with the film ''Baap Kamai/Fortune and the Fools'' (1926), directed by Kanjibhai Rathod. The role of the hero was portrayed by Khalil and the film was produced by "Kohinoor Films". The film was a hit. ''Gujarati Vishwakosh'' ( gu, ગુજરાતી વિશ્વકોશ, ) is an encyclopedia in Gujarati, one of the official languages of India, published by Gujarat Vishwakosh Trust, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. It can be considered the first full encyclopedia in the Gujarati language. ''Gunsundari'' is 1934 Indian Hindi social drama film directed by Chandulal Shah. The film was a remake of 1927 film of same name and was remade again in 1948. It was successful. Plot Shyamaldas has two sons Chandrakant and Vinu, and a daughter Kusum. Due to his alcoholic father's behaviour, Chandrakant is disheartened as falls for schemes of Madanrai and prostitute Bansari who are plotting to get her property. Sushila, a sister-in-law of Chandrakant's wife Gunsundari, has troubled relationship with his husband Vasantrai who takes away her necklace. Gunsundari helps her by giving her some money which she can not reveal to other due to promise of secrecy. She gets into trouble for it later. Gunsundari tries to save his husband by seducing him back to his family but was cast out to streets. She eventually meets her husband Chandrakant who has been to streets now. Ranjit Studios
Ranjit Studios, also known as Ranjit Movietone, was an Indian film production company with studio facilities located in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It produced films between 1929 and mid-1970s. The studio was founded by Chandulal Shah along with Gohar Kayoum Mamajiwala. It was one of the three largest studios in Bollywood of its time, besides Kohinoor Film Company and Imperial Film Company. The company began production of silent films in 1929 under the banner Ranjit Film Company and by 1932 had made 39 pictures, most of them social dramas. The company changed its name to Ranjit Movietone in 1932 and during the 1930s produced numerous successful talkies at the rate of about six a year. At this time, the studio employed around 300 actors, technicians and other employees. Plot Gopaldas Seth has three children. His elder son Chandrakant is married to ideal wife Guniyal. His seven-year-old son Vinu treats Guniyal like his mother. Nirupa Roy
Nirupa Roy (born Kokila Kishorechandra Bulsara; 4 January 1931 – 13 October 2004) was an Indian actress who had appeared in Hindi films. Noted for her portrayals of tragedy and sorrow, Roy was known for her acting ability, and was uncharitably called the "Queen of Misery" in Hindi film circles. Roy was active from 1946 to 1999, and was best known for playing motherly roles. Roy appeared in over 250 films, and won three Filmfare Awards throughout her career, as well as being nominated for one. In 2004, Roy received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. The Cinema of India consists of motion pictures produced in India, which had a large effect on world cinema since the late 20th century.
