Gunnar Malmqvist
Gunnar Malmqvist (born 25 December 1940) is a Swedish former motorcycle speedway rider. He earned 13 caps for the Sweden national speedway team. Speedway career Malmqvist was a leading speedway rider in the late 1960s. He reached the final of the Speedway World Championship in the 1968 Individual Speedway World Championship. He won the Swedish Speedway Championship for pair racing together with Conny Samuelsson. He rode in the top tier of British Speedway during the 1967 British League season, riding for Exeter Falcons. The same year he was selected for the Swedish side for their UK tour. Njudungarna
Njudungarna or Vetlanda Speedway are a motorcycle speedway team based in Vetlanda, Sweden, who compete in the Swedish Speedway Team Championship. They race at the Vetlanda Motorstadion and are ten times champions of Sweden. History 1946 to 1965 The club was formed in 1946, and arranged their first meeting three years later. The team raced as Njudungarna and first participated in the league system during the 1961 Swedish speedway season although a team called Vetlanda had raced in 1950. 1967 to 1985 They raced in the highest division of Swedish speedway for the first time in 1967, following their promotion after they won the second division in 1966. In their maiden season in the top league they finished runner-up to Getingarna, a feat they repeated again the next two seasons in 1969 and 1970. The 1967 British League season was the 33rd season of the top tier of Motorcycle speedway, speedway in the United Kingdom and the third season known as the British League. Summary The league was made up of the same 19 teams that competed in the previous year. Swindon Robins led by the world champion Barry Briggs won their first top-tier league title but were pushed all the way by Coventry Bees and West Ham Hammers. Swindon finished with four riders with averages over eight, Briggs topped the entire league with 11.05 but the contributions from Martin Ashby (8.83), Bob Kilby (8.61) and Mike Broadbank (8.55) were pivotal in the Swindon's success. The Exeter Falcons were a Motorcycle speedway, speedway team based in the city of Exeter. The Falcons operated from 1947 to 2005 at the County Ground Stadium in Exeter. History Origins & 1920s Speedway began at the County Ground in 1929, when the Southern Speedways Ltd, led by Mr Seward Glanfield agreed a ten-year contract with the Devon Athletic Ground Company. The first meeting was held on 9 March 1929 but despite a full season of racing (which included an Exeter team racing challenge matches) the company went into liquidation. 1930s A second promotion called County Speedways Ltd, ran the speedway in 1930 and 1931 but also went into liquidation. Conny Samuelsson
Erik Tage Conny Samuelsson (born 15 August 1947) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from Sweden. He earned 9 caps for the Sweden national speedway team. Speedway career Samuelsson won the silver medal at the Individual Ice Speedway World Championship in the 1977 Individual Ice Speedway World Championship. He had won a bronze medal the previous year in the 1976 Individual Ice Speedway World Championship. He rode in the top tier of British Speedway in 1969 riding for Oxford Cheetahs. It was the only club outside of the Njudungarna team that he ever rode for, although he was allocated to Sheffield Tigers in 1971 but the deal did not materialise. He spent 35 years riding for Njudungarna. 1968 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1968 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 23rd edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. Ivan Mauger won his first World title. Fellow countryman Barry Briggs finished second and Pole Edward Jancarz took the bronze medal. Format changes The format of the Championship changed again for the 1968 event.
