Guitarchitecture
Guitarchitecture is a term developed by Chuck Hammer in 1977, describing an approach to soundtrack composition, employing discrete textured guitar layers. The core idea behind Guitarchitecture: "to expand the guitar's sonic vocabulary", is contextual and process based: The Roland GR 500 Guitar/synthesizer allowed partial - "infinite sustain" through the use of a built in magnetic field sustainer. This "sustainer" radically altered the temporal properties of guitar string response, extending its basic physical sonic capabilities. As the instrument could now sustain single notes and chords almost "infinitely", the music that could now be conceived and rendered with a guitar were widely reconsidered. The ideas and concepts surrounding Guitarchitecture were gaining strength while Chuck Hammer toured live with a GR 500 Guitar Synth with Lou Reed 1978–1980. Chuck Hammer
Chuck Hammer is an American guitarist and soundtrack composer, known for textural guitar work with Lou Reed, David Bowie, and Guitarchitecture. As an artist, Hammer is best known for his Guitarchitecture recordings, though he is also widely regarded as a leading New York City based soundtrack composer, having scored approximately 300 documentary films. He is currently developing a series of improvisational textural guitar recordings. He attended University at Buffalo, studying classical guitar with Oswald Rantucci, jazz with Archie Shepp, and attended lectures presented by Karlheinz Stockhausen. As a guitarist Hammer was a central figure within the Lou Reed Band that hosted the June 1979 concerts at The Bottom Line in New York City that included Don Cherry. A guitar synthesizer is any one of a number of musical instrument systems that allow a guitarist to access synthesizer capabilities. Overview Today's guitar synths are direct descendants of 1970s devices from manufacturers (often in partnership) such as Hammond Innovex and Ovation, Ludwig, EMS, 360 Systems, Norlin Music and Maestro, Ampeg and Hagström, Arp, Roland Corporation and FujiGen ( GR-500 and GR-300), New England Digital, Electro-Harmonix, Casio, Terratec/Axon, Starr Labs, Ibanez, Holt Electro Acoustic Research, Zeta Systems, and Yamaha. Lou Reed
Lewis Allan Reed (March 2, 1942October 27, 2013) was an American musician, songwriter, and poet. He was the guitarist, singer, and principal songwriter for the rock band the Velvet Underground and had a solo career that spanned five decades. Ashes To Ashes (David Bowie Song)
"Ashes to Ashes" is a song by English singer-songwriter David Bowie, originally released on 1 August 1980 as the lead single from his 1980 album '' Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)''. Co-produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti, it was recorded from February to April 1980 in New York and London and features guitar synthesiser played by Chuck Hammer. An art rock, art pop and new wave song led by a flanged piano riff, the lyrics act as a sequel to Bowie's 1969 hit "Space Oddity", depicting the astronaut Major Tom as a "junkie" alone floating in space. Bowie partially based the lyrics on his own experiences with drug addiction throughout the 1970s. The song's music video, co-directed by Bowie and David Mallet, was at the time the most expensive music video ever made.
