Guillermo Ayoví Erazo
Guillermo Ayoví Erazo (November 10, 1930 - September 10, 2022) better known as Papá Roncón was an Afro-Ecuadorian musician, singer, and marimba player. Life Papá Roncón was born in Borbón, Esmeraldas, Ecuador, Esmeraldas, Ecuador on November 10, 1930. He learned to play the marimba at an early age with the Chachi people. He began to make himself known in the 1970s, first in his village, and then at national and international levels, with tours in the United States, Venezuela, Colombia and Japan. In 2001 he received the Premio Eugenio Espejo for his contribution to the Ecuadorian culture through the practice and teaching of the marimba and traditional dances. He also directed several films, including documentaries. In July 2007, he and Petita Palma were invited to National Assembly (Ecuador), Ecuador's National Assembly where a plenary session was conducted in honour of the two of them. Petita Palma
Petita Palma Piñeiros (born 4 March 1927) is an Ecuador, Ecuadorian singer who is regarded as a national treasure. Marimba music and traditions from the Ecuadorian province of Esmeraldas are recognised by the UN as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Life Palma was born in Esmeraldas, Ecuador, Esmeraldas on the north-west coast of Ecuador in 1927, but she was brought up in Borbon. She discovered the marimba music and the local poetry. She regards herself as an artist and folklorist, with a special interest in the marimba instrument that is known to the Chachi people. When she began to perform she was called the "black marimbera" which she thought was intended to be an insult. However she was proud of her ancestry and she decided that she liked the nickname. She formed a music group called ''Tierra Caliente'' that would be with her for some time. She and the group would later create the Marimba School in 1969. Esmeraldas () is a coastal city in northwestern Ecuador. It is the seat of the Esmeraldas Canton and capital of the Esmeraldas Province. It has an international sea port and a small airport ( IATA location identifier: ESM). Afro-Ecuadorians (), also known as Black Ecuadorians (), are Ecuadorians of predominantly Sub-Saharan African descent. History and background Most Afro-Ecuadorians are the descendants of enslaved Africans who were transported by predominantly British slavers to Ecuador from the early 16th century. In 1553, the first enslaved Africans reached Ecuador in Quito when a slave ship heading to Peru was stranded off the Ecuadorian coast. The enslaved Africans escaped and established Maroon (people), maroon settlements in Esmeraldas, which became a safe haven as many Africans fleeing slave conditions either escaped to there or were forced to live there. Marimba
The marimba ( ) is a musical instrument in the percussion family that consists of wooden bars that are struck by mallets. Below each bar is a resonator pipe that amplifies particular harmonics of its sound. Compared to the xylophone, the marimba has a lower range. Typically, the bars of a marimba are arranged chromatically, like the keys of a piano. The marimba is a type of idiophone. Chachi People
Chachi people (also Cayapas) are an ethnic group who live in the rainforest area of northwestern Esmeraldas on the northern coast of Ecuador. They live by the Cayapas River in the Centro El Encanto, a section of the Cotacachi Cayapas Ecological Reserve, as do Afro Ecuadorian people; the two groups have co-existed in the forest for about 400 years. There were approximately 5,000 Chachi in 2003. History According to Chachi oral tradition, they originated in Imbabura Province in the mountains near Ibarra, fleeing after the Castilian invasion and spent time in Chimborazo. They were forced to settle in the area after the Spanish conquest of Ibarra, which led them to move to Esmeraldas.
