Guggenheim International Award
The Guggenheim International Award was established in 1956 as "both a recognition of outstanding achievements in the visual arts and an important manifestation of international goodwill". A shortlist of artists and works were selected by juries to represent different countries, with one overall winner selected by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and awarded a monetary prize of US$10,000, then the largest art prize awarded in the US. Prizes were given every two years from 1956 to 1964 (omitting 1962). The award was discontinued after 1964 in order to divert funds to acquiring further artwork for the Foundation. Solomon R
Solomon (), also called Jedidiah, was the fourth monarch of the Kingdom of Israel and Judah, according to the Hebrew Bible. The successor of his father David, he is described as having been the penultimate ruler of all Twelve Tribes of Israel under an amalgamated Israel and Judah. The hypothesized dates of Solomon's reign are from 970 to 931 BCE. According to the biblical narrative, after Solomon's death, his son and successor Rehoboam adopted harsh policies towards the northern Israelites, who then rejected the reign of the House of David and sought Jeroboam as their king. The Val d'Orcia or Valdorcia () is a region of Tuscany, central Italy, which extends from the hills south of Siena to Monte Amiata. Wall Of The Sun And Wall Of The Moon
The ''Wall of the Sun'' and ''Wall of the Moon'' are a pair of murals made of ceramics and designed by the Catalan artist Joan Miró for the UNESCO building in Paris. The works were carried out by the ceramicist Josep Llorens Artigas in 1955. Initially, the walls were installed on the Place de Fontenoy in Paris, but afterwards were enclosed in a building that was constructed in order to protect them from damage caused by acid rain. History Joan Miró and Josep Llorens Artigas met in 1910 at the school of art of the artist Francesc Galí (1880–1965), in Barcelona. Josep Llorens Artigas
Josep Llorens i Artigas (16 June 1892 – 11 December 1980) was a Spanish ceramic artist known for his collaboration with Joan Miró. He is credited with relaunching ceramic, ceramics as a European art form. Life Artigas was born in Barcelona on 16 June 1892. He went to Escola superior d'arts i indústries i belles arts. He worked as an art critic on the Barcelona-based newspaper ''La Veu''. Artigas went to France and he wrote a thesis on Egyptian pottery and their blue glazes at University of Paris, the Sorbonne. In 1924 he had a studio on the rue Blomet in Paris. There he joined the avant-garde joining a group originally started by Gustave Courbet. He met Albert Marquet, Raoul Dufy, Pablo Picasso, Luis Buñuel and Georges Braque. Louise Averill Svendsen
Louise Averill Svendsen (1915–1994) was an American art historian. Early life and education Born in Old Town, Maine, Svendsen pursued an undergraduate degree in art at Wellesley College and later completed her Ph.D. at Yale University with a dissertation on 19th-century American painter, John Vanderlyn. In 1950, she married Thoralf Svendsen, a Norwegian diplomat who predeceased her in 1983. Career Svendsen began her career as an academic teaching art history at Duke University, Goucher College, and American University during the 1940s and early 1950s. She joined the Guggenheim Museum in 1954 as a lecturer, hired by James Johnson Sweeney, the museum's first director.
