Guaíra, Paraná
Guaíra () is a Municipalities of Brazil, municipality in the states of Brazil, state of Paraná (state), Paraná in the Southern Region, Brazil, Southern Region of Brazil. The population is 33,310 (2020 est.) in an area of 560 km2. The elevation is 517 m. This place name comes from the Tupi language and means "place difficult to access". It borders the Paraguayan city of Salto del Guairá, across the Paraná River, which marks the border between Brazil and Paraguay. Just like its Paraguayan twin city, it is named after the Guaíra Falls, which was located on the border with Paraguay. The falls was submerged after the construction of the Itaipu Dam in 1982. Guayrá
Guayrá (initially called Gobernación del Guayrá) was a historical region of the Spanish Empire, located in the Governorate of Paraguay, within the colonial Viceroyalty of Peru. The region is located in present-day Paraguay and Paraná. There are some conflicting etymologies for the origin of the name, with some claiming it was named after a cacique of the region whose name was Guayrá or Guayracá. Alternatively, the word might come from Guarani "kwa y ra" ("can not pass", "impassable") or even "guay ra" ("river that goes eyond). Guaíra Falls
The Guairá Falls () or Guaíra Falls () were a series of immense waterfalls on the Paraná River along the border between Paraguay and Brazil. The falls ceased to exist in 1982 when they were inundated by the impoundment of the Itaipu Dam reservoir. While published figures vary, ranging from per second to per second, Guaíra's flow rate was among the greatest of any then-existing falls on Earth. The falls comprised 18 cataracts clustered in seven groups—hence their Portuguese name, ''Sete Quedas'' (Seven Falls)—near the Brazilian municipality of Guaíra, Paraná and Salto del Guairá, the easternmost city in Paraguay. Guaíra is a municipality in São Paulo state in Brazil. The population is 41,040 (2020 est.) in an area of 1258 km2. History In the northeastern region of São Paulo, between the Rio Grande, Pardo River and the Sapucaí River, in what was then called Nuporanga, Antônio Marques Garcia founded a town in the called "Corredeira," along the path to Santa dos Olhos D'Água (which is today known as Ipuã). Saltos del Guairá () is a city in Paraguay and the capital of Canindeyú department. It is located about 200 km north of Ciudad del Este. It borders the Brazilian municipality of Guaíra, across the Paraná River which marks the border between Paraguay and Brazil. The name "Guaíra" comes from the Tupi language and means "place difficult to access". The name "Saltos del Guairá", which means "Guairá Falls" in Spanish, is named after the Guaíra Falls (just like its Brazilian twin city), which were located on the border with Brazil.
