Guardian Rock
Guardian Rock is a low ice-free rock lying in Bigourdan Fjord, north of Parvenu Point, Pourquoi Pas Island, close off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Bigourdan Fjord
Bigourdan Fjord is a sound, long in an east-west direction and averaging wide, lying between Pourquoi Pas Island and the southwest part of Arrowsmith Peninsula, along the west coast of Graham Land in Antarctica. It was discovered by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1908–10, under Jean-Baptiste Charcot, and named by him for Guillaume Bigourdan, a noted French astronomer. Pourquoi Pas Island
Pourquoi Pas Island is a mountainous island, long and from wide, lying between Bigourdan Fjord and Bourgeois Fjord off the west coast of Graham Land in West Antarctica. It was discovered by the French Antarctic Expedition under Charcot, 1908–1910. The island was charted more accurately by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Rymill, 1934–1937, who named it for Charcot's expedition ship, the '' Pourquoi-Pas''. Antarctic Peninsula
The Antarctic Peninsula, known as O'Higgins Land in Chile and Tierra de San Martin in Argentina, and originally as Graham Land in the United Kingdom and the Palmer Peninsula in the United States, is the northernmost part of mainland Antarctica. The Antarctic Peninsula is part of the larger peninsula of West Antarctica, protruding from a line between Cape Adams (Weddell Sea) and a point on the mainland south of the Eklund Islands. Beneath the ice sheet that covers it, the Antarctic Peninsula consists of a string of bedrock islands; these are separated by deep channels whose bottoms lie at depths considerably below current sea level.
