Gråkallen Line
The Gråkallen Line ( no, Gråkallbanen) is an suburban tram line located in Trondheim, Norway. As the only remaining part of the Trondheim Tramway, it runs from the city centre at St. Olav's Gate, via the suburban area Byåsen to Lian. It is designated Line 9 (previously Line 1), and is served by six Class 8 articulated trams. After the closure of the Arkhangelsk tramway in 2004, it became the world's northernmost tramway system. The line was opened as the only private tramway in Trondheim by A/S Graakalbanen in 1924. At first it was built to Munkvoll, but extended to Ugla in 1925, and to Lian in 1933. Operations were taken over by the municipal Trondheim Trafikkselskap in 1972, but it was closed along with the rest of the tramway in 1988. Tram
A tram (called a streetcar or trolley in North America) is a rail vehicle that travels on tramway tracks on public urban streets; some include segments on segregated right-of-way. The tramlines or networks operated as public transport are called tramways or simply trams/streetcars. Many recently built tramways use the contemporary term light rail. Munkvoll (station)
Munkvoll Station (''Munkvoll stasjon'') is a tram station on Gråkallbanen. It is part of the Trondheim Tramway in Trondheim, Norway. The station was built in 1924 as the terminus for the tramway. In addition to housing the Trondheim Tramway Museum, it features the offices and depot for the tram operator, Boreal Bane. Ila Line
The Ila Line () is tramway between Trondheim Torg and Ila in Trondheim, Norway. The line was part of the original Trondheim Tramway and opened in 1901, and replaced the horse omnibus service from 1893. The line was closed in 1988, but part of it was reopened in 1990 when the Gråkall Line was reborn. The line is the northernmost tramway in the world and is meter gauge. The line follows Kongens Gate from Ilevollen to Trondheim Torg and was operated by Trondheim Sporvei until 1974. When A/S Graakalbanen started its tram service in 1924 it licensed the track to get to its terminus at St. Olav's Gate. Ila (station)
Ila, formerly Ilevolden, is a tram stop on the Trondheim Tramway, located at Ila, Trondheim in Trondheim, Norway. It was the original terminus of Ilalinjen, the first tramway and opened in 1901. In 1924 it also became a stop for the private Gråkallbanen that ran to Lian. The station featured at first a loop around the park it served, but it was later changed to a turning triangle. The station was the terminus for Line 1 of Trondheim Sporvei until 1971 when it was merged with A/S Graakalbanen and Line 1 was extended to Lian. Norwegian State Railways
Vygruppen, branded as Vy, is a government-owned railway company which operates most passenger train services and many bus services in Norway. The company is owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Transport. Its sub-brands include Vy Buss coach services, CargoNet freight trains and the Swedish train transport company Tågkompaniet. In 2009, NSB carried 52 million train passengers and 104 million bus passengers. On 24 April 2019, passenger train and bus services were rebranded as Vy. Ferdinand Bjerke
Ferdinand Bjerke was a Norwegian railway engineer. He graduated from Christiania Technical School in 1893, and started working for the Norwegian State Railways. Bjerke first worked on the Gjøvik Line, then on the Bergen Line and the Dovre Line. From 1911 to 1918, he was in charge of the rebuilding of Trondheim Central Station. During his period in Trondheim, he was involved in the plans for the Gråkallen Line of the Trondheim Tramway, and made the plans for the route, and sat on the board. His main achievement was participating as senior engineer with the work on the Flåm Line. Nils Christoffer Bøckman
Nils Christoffer Bøckman (6 July 1880 – 22 December 1973) was a Norwegian lieutenant-colonel and businessperson. Born in Trondheim, Bøckman was educated at the military academy, graduating as lieutenant in 1901. He was promoted to captain in 1905, major in 1930, and lieutenant-colonel as part of his participation in World War II in Northern Norway. Bøckman started working for Meråker Brug, where he was responsible for the estates in Verdal. He was also president of Trondhjems Skiklub. In 1916, he was elected into the board of the tramway company Graakalbanen. In 1919, he was hired as director of the company, and would remain in the position until 1966, when the company was nationalized. During World War II, two members of the company's board were executed. When Bøckman would not call in the Nazi-appointed board that replaced them, he was arrested and spent the rest of the war in the prison camps Falstad and Grini. Philippa York (born Robert Millar on 13 September 1958) is a Scottish journalist and former professional road racing cyclist. York, who competed when known as Robert Millar, is one of Britain's most successful cyclists. York won the "King of the Mountains" competition in the 1984 Tour de France and finished fourth overall. This success was the first time a British rider won a major Tour classification, and was unsurpassed as the highest Tour finish for a Briton for over 20 years until Bradley Wiggins was retrospectively placed third in the 2009 Tour de France. Gråkallen
Gråkallen is a mountain in the Bymarka area in the municipality of Trondheim in Trøndelag county, Norway. The tall mountain is located in the Byåsen part of the city of Trondheim. The summit is covered by an abandoned fenced military installation. Below the summit (on the col to the right of the summit above the lake) there is a ski station accessible by bus from Trondheim. Munkvoll Depot
Munkvoll Depot is the only remaining depot of the Trondheim Tramway, Norway. The depot was first built in 1924 for Graakalbanen. Located beside the transformer station, It was located at Munkvoll, the then terminus of the Gråkallen Line. In 1953, a second hangar-style depot building was built on the other side of the track. This was razed in 1983 to make way for the current building.
