Plön (district)
Plön () is a district in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is bounded by (from the east and clockwise) the districts of Ostholstein and Segeberg, the city of Neumünster, the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde, the city of Kiel and the Baltic Sea. History The district was established in 1867. In 1932 it was enlarged with parts of the dissolved district of Bordesholm. During the 20th century some municipalities left the district due to incorporation into the city of Kiel. Geography The inland part of this small district is covered with lakes. The '' Großer Plöner See'' ("Great Plön Lake", 29 km2) and the '' Selenter See'' ("Lake Selent", 22 km2) are the largest lakes in Schleswig-Holstein. Neumünster
Neumünster () is a city in the middle of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. With more than 79,000 registered inhabitants, it is the fourth-largest municipality in Schleswig-Holstein (behind Kiel, Lübeck and Flensburg). The ''Holstenhallen'' and the ''Stadthalle'' make the city an important trade fair location. History The city was first formally mentioned as ''Wippendorp im Gau Faldera'' in 1127. In that year, the Bishop Vicelinus was sent there by the Archbishop of Bremen to perform missionary work. By 1136, Vicelinus built a new monastery there (Latin: ''novum monasterium,'' Greco-Latin'': Neomonasterium,'' German'': neues Kloster'' or ''neues Münster''). Dosenmoor
The Dosenmoor is a regenerative and, in places, preserved raised bog in the north German state of Schleswig-Holstein. It lies near the town of Neumünster east of the village of Einfeld and covers an area of 521 hectares. The almost circular bog lies on the drainage divide, watershed between the River Eider, which flows northwards, and the Stör, which flows towards the south. Vegetation The bog, which has been used for centuries, no longer exhibits the typical character of a living raised bog over much of its area. Only in some areas are there the remnants of peat moss, cottongrass and Erica tetralix, cross-leaved heathland and Andromeda polifolia, bog-rosemary. Secondary vegetation of Calluna, ling (''Calluna vulgaris''), Empetrum nigrum, crowberry (''Empetrum nigrum'') und Molinia caerulea, purple moor-grass (''Molinia caerulea'') are widespread.
