Grozny (, ; ) is the capital city of Chechnya, Russia. The city lies on the Sunzha River. According to the 2021 census, it had a population of 328,533 — up from 210,720 recorded in the 2002 census, but still less than the 399,688 recorded in the 1989 census. It was previously known as (until 1870). Names In Russian, "Grozny" means "fearsome", "menacing", or "redoubtable", the same word as in Ivan Grozny (Ivan the Terrible). While the official name in Chechen is the same, informally the city is known as "" (""), which literally means "the city () on the Sunzha River ()". In 1996, during the First Chechen War, the authorities of the Chechen republic of Ichkeria renamed the city Dzhokhar-Ghala (), literally Dzhokhar City, or Dzhokhar/Djohar for short, after Dzhokhar Dudayev, the first president of the republic, killed by the Russian armed forces. Akhmat Kadyrov Square (), also known as the Square named after the 1st President of the Chechen Republic (), is a public area in Grozny, Chechnya. It is located at the intersection of Vladimir Putin Avenue and Khusein Isaev Avenue. It is named in honor of the first leader of the Chechen Republic Akhmat Kadyrov. Description A monument to police officers who died in the fight against terrorists and Wahhabis was erected on the square. On the square for the 200th anniversary of Grozny, a large map of the Chechen Republic was laid out from colored paving stones. On it, the boundaries of the subject were highlighted in gray, and the outlines of all areas are highlighted in black. History In Soviet times, the square was named after Vladimir Lenin.
