ESP Disk
ESP-Disk is a New York–based record company and label founded in 1963 by lawyer Bernard Stollman. History Though it originally existed to release Esperanto-based music, beginning with its second release (Albert Ayler's ''Spiritual Unity''), ESP became the most important exponent of what is commonly referred to as free jazz. Early releases included albums by Paul Bley, Pharoah Sanders and Sun Ra. ESP also released recordings by uncommercial underground rock acts including the Fugs, The Godz and Pearls Before Swine. The label's motto is "The artists alone decide what you will hear." Bernard Stollman faced allegations of not paying royalties to the artists that were signed to ESP-Disk. Tom Rapp of the band Pearls Before Swine claimed that: "We never got any money from ESP. Never, not even like a hundred dollars or something. My real sense is that he tollmanwas abducted by aliens, and when he was probed it erased his memory of where all the money was". Peter Stampfel of the ban ... Currents, Constellations
''Currents, Constellations'' is an album by The Nels Cline 4 that was released in April 2018 by the Blue Note label. Reception The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek stated "In the aftermath of 2014's highly regarded ''Room'', the acoustic encounter between guitarists Nels Cline and Julian Lage, both men speculated on what adding a rhythm section might sound like ... ''Currents, Constellations'' is virtually free of excess. Instead, it delivers a panoramic approach to group interaction with abundant dynamic and harmonic variety. From jazz to rock to improv, this set is a remarkable illustration of the question Cline and Lage posed about what they would sound like with a rhythm section. Damn fine is the answer". On All About Jazz, Mike Jurkovic said "the pointillist, textured music found on ''Currents, Constellations'' comes as no surprise and great welcome. He and Lage simply play as if of one mind, unglued from any preconceived notions or tight-ass dogma".Jurkovic, MAll About Jazz Re ... History Historically, Blue Note has principally been associated with the "hard bop" style of jazz (mixing bebop with other forms of music including soul music, soul, blues, rhythm and blues and gospel music, gospel), but also recorded essential albums in the avant-gard ... Lovers (Nels Cline Album)
''Lovers'' is an album by guitarist Nels Cline which was released in August 2016 on the Blue Note label. Cline stated " I hope ''Lovers'' offers something of an update of the 'mood music' idea and ideal, while celebrating and challenging our iconic notion of romance". Reception In Rolling Stone Will Hermes wrote "An update of Fifties "mood music", this chilled-out instrumental soundtracks for breakfast in bed with mai-tais and late-night booty calls, ''Lovers'' is a departure for Wilco guitar swami Nels Cline, whose side projects generally involve free-jazz freakouts. That's not to say that this wordless double-disc set, featuring an all-star orchestra full of sharp improvisers, isn't wildly inventive in its water-colored way". Pitchfork's Seth Colter Walls rated the album 7.6 out of 10, saying, "Cline has delivered a chamber-orchestra set that’s notable for relying on some “Great American Songbook” standards by the likes of Jerome Kern and Rodgers & Hammerstein... Macroscope (album)
''Macroscope'' is the fifth album by The Nels Cline Singers led by American guitarist Nels Cline which was released in April 29, 2014 on the Mack Avenue label. Reception The Allmusic review by Sean Westergaard awarded the album 4 stars out of 5, stating "while the Nels Cline Singers may have a new bass player and a new label, fortunately their sound has not changed. They're still making some of the most interesting, adventurous, genre-smashing music of the early 21st century. Guitar nerds need to check this out, but it's got wider appeal than that too". The Guardian's John Fordham rated the album 3 stars out of 5, saying, "''Macroscope'' is a blast through warped Latin music, Hendrix freakouts, double-taking George Bensonian smoothness, electronica and grunge". Writing for All About Jazz, Matt Marshall stated "Since this is a Nels Cline album there are, of course, guitar solos of blistering beauty. But these moments are but part of an organic progression of an ever- roiling mus ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Room (Nels Cline And Julian Lage Album)
''Room'' is an album by guitarists Nels Cline and Julian Lage which was released in November 2014 on the Mack Avenue label. Reception Allmusic awarded the album 4 stars out of 5, with reviewer Thom Jurek stating "For all its starkness, on ''Room'' these players not only support one another, they create space for reconsideration and expansion. Cline takes Lage further out onto the improvisational ledge than he's ever been before, while Lage draws Cline toward a sense of lyricism and restraint he hasn't employed in many years. ''Room'' betrays no hesitation, displays no false moves, offers no space for safety. And that's just how this duo likes it. It is abundant in its offer of pleasure for fans of guitar jazz and it may even hold wider appeal for those who are drawn to in-the-moment musical creation". The Irish Times' Cormac Larkin rated the album 4 stars out of 5, saying, "''Room'' is as fresh and creative a meeting of two musicians as you’ll find". JazzTimes' Mike Shanley sai ...
