Grottaminarda (Irpino: ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Avellino (Campania), situated northeast of Naples, in the southwest of Italy. Grottaminarda is part of Roman Catholic Diocese of Ariano Irpino-Lacedonia and its territory borders with the municipalities of Ariano Irpino, Bonito, Flumeri, Fontanarosa, Frigento, Gesualdo, Melito Irpino and Mirabella Eclano. Economy Today, Grottaminarda's industrial district provides jobs for workers commuting from nearby cities. Many small and medium farms are present as well. The comune is a producer of torrone and salami. A large market, including vendors of fruit, vegetables, cheese, salami and a wide variety of household items is held every Monday. Leopoldo Faretra
Leopoldo Faretra (Grottaminarda, 1 February 1908 – Passo Eclano, 25 May 2001) was an Italian physician. He devoted his life to those in need of care and was strongly opposed to his political ideals. From 2 November 1943 to 13 April 1945 directed the Infirmary in Italian concentration camp in Hemer, in the northwest of Germany, in which he worked a resistance unarmed, allowing them to escape the German heavy work in the hundreds of Italians. On 3 September 1944, Faretra was reported to the Gestapo for propagating anti-German propaganda and to have caused the failure of the request for voluntary cooperation by the Germans advanced to the Italian military infirmary run by him. After his death, 16 March 2010 he was awarded the Medal of Honor due to him as an Italian citizen deported to a concentration camp Nazi. Life Leopoldo Faretra was born in Grottaminarda. Carpignano (Grottaminarda)
Carpignano is a southern Italian village and hamlet (''frazione'') of Grottaminarda, a municipality in the province of Avellino, Campania. In 2011 it had a population of 219. History Village's original name is actually ''Crispignanus'', which refers to native trees called "crisp" or "carp" (Hornbeam in local dialect) which have now gone extinct in the area. Some village elders still use this term; however, it is now becoming obsolete. Legend holds that Carpignano was once a thick forest where a portrait of a Black Madonna hung on a tree. Neighboring farmers, who had stumbled across the portrait, tried to take the portrait back to their town several times, yet during the night, somehow, the portrait returned to the tree. Thus, the portrait was kept in that spot, upon which a grand sanctuary was built, called the Santuario di Carpignano. The portrait is adorned on the main wall in the church to this day. Vincenzo Volpe
Vincenzo Volpe (December 14, 1855 – February 9, 1929) was an Italian painter. From 1874 to 1890, he painted mostly genre scenes. From 1891 to 1896, he concentrated on religious art, then returned to genre works and portraits. Biography He was born in Grottaminarda, Campania. His family moved to Naples when he was eight, and in 1871 he enrolled at the Accademia di Belle Arti there and studied with Domenico Morelli. In 1877 in Naples, he exhibited a painting titled ''A peaceful interruption''; in 1883 in Milan he exhibited ''Orazione'' and Accordo difficile''. He submitted four paintings the same year in Rome, including ''Canzone allegra'', which depicts an old man squatting on a stool, playing guitar and singing to a bed-ridden convalescent girl. In 1884 in Turin, he exhibited ''Nello studio''; in 1887 in Venice: ''Una partita d'onore'' and ''Lezione di musica''.
