This case was an appeal by the Northern Territory and the Commonwealth of Australia of the decision handed down by the Full Court of the Federal Court of Australia in ''Northern Territory of Australia v Griffiths'' 017FCAFC 106. The High Court of Australia ruled to reduce the amount of compensation awarded to the Ngaliwurru People and the Nungali People by the Full Court of the Federal Court of Australia. Susan Kiefel
Susan Mary Kiefel (; born 1954) is an Australian lawyer and barrister who was the 13th Chief Justice of Australia from 2017 to 2023. She concurrently served on the High Court of Australia from 2007 to 2023, previously being a judge of both the Supreme Court of Queensland and the Federal Court of Australia. Kiefel is the first woman to serve in the position of Chief Justice. Early life and education Kiefel was born in Cairns, Queensland, in 1954. She attended Sandgate District State High School, leaving at the age of 15 upon completing year 10. In 1971, she completed secretarial training at Kangaroo Point Technical College on a scholarship. Debra Sue Mortimer is an Australian judge who has been the Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia since 7 April 2023. She was born in New Zealand but has practised law in Australia. She has been a judge of the Federal Court of Australia since 2013, having previously been a Senior Counsel practising at the Victorian Bar in migration law, environmental law and anti-discrimination law. Early life and education Debra Mortimer was raised outside of Auckland, New Zealand. Her father worked as a bookbinder in Auckland. Michael Laurence Barker is a former Australian judge who served as a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia from 9 February 2009 to 11 February 2019. He previously served as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia and as President of the Western Australian State Administrative Tribunal. Barker studied at the University of Western Australia and was admitted to practice in 1973. He practiced in Perth for several years, before undertaking postgraduate study at York University in Canada.
