GridSpice
GridSpice is an open source cloud-based simulation package for the smart grid and incorporates code from MATPOWER and GridLAB-D. GridSpice models the interactions between all parts of the electrical grid including generation, transmission, distribution, storage and loads. Open energy system models are energy system models that are open source. However, some of them may use third party proprietary software as part of their workflows to input, process, or output data. Preferably, these models use open data, which facilitates open science. Energy system models are used to explore future energy systems and are often applied to questions involving energy and climate policy. GridLAB-D
GridLAB-D is an open-source (BSD license) simulation and analysis tool that models emerging smart grid energy technologies. It couples power flow calculations with distribution automation models, building energy use and appliance demand models, and market models. It is used primarily to estimate the benefits and impacts of smart grid technology. Research and development Funding for the research and development of GridLAB-D has come from multiple sources, including the United States Department of Energy (US DOE) and the California Energy Commission (CEC). BSD License
BSD licenses are a family of permissive free software licenses, imposing minimal restrictions on the use and distribution of covered software. This is in contrast to copyleft licenses, which have share-alike requirements. The original BSD license was used for its namesake, the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD), a Unix-like operating system. The original version has since been revised, and its descendants are referred to as modified BSD licenses. BSD is both a license and a class of license (generally referred to as BSD-like). The modified BSD license (in wide use today) is very similar to the license originally used for the BSD version of Unix.
