Grevenmacher (; ) is a commune with town status in eastern Luxembourg, near the border with Germany. It gives its name to the canton of Grevenmacher, and, until its abolition in 2015, the district of Grevenmacher. The town is situated on the left bank of the river Moselle, in a wine growing region. , the commune of Grevenmacher has a population of 5,092. Grevenmacher () is a canton in the east of Luxembourg. The canton's name derives from Grevenmacher, a commune with town status. Neither the canton, town, or commune of Grevenmacher should be confused with the former district of Grevenmacher, one of three administrative units in Luxembourg abolished in October 2015. It borders Germany. There are twelve towns in Luxembourg, as defined by statute. Despite the status as towns, they are not all contiguous urban area, urbanised areas. They are similar to Communes of Luxembourg, communes, but have been given a separate legal status. There is a technical difference between the status of commune and towns, but this is limited in practicality. Joseph Lortz
Joseph (Adam) Lortz (13 December 1887 in Grevenmacher, Luxembourg – 21 February 1975 in Luxembourg) was a Roman Catholic church historian. He was a highly regarded Reformation historian and ecumenist. Beginning in the 1940s, Lortz made his ecumenical views available to general readers as well as to scholars in order to promote reconciliation between Catholics and Protestants. His writings played a role in the thinking that manifested itself in the Second Vatican Council's ''Decree on Ecumenism'', ''Unitatis Redintegratio'' (21 November 1964). Theodore Wildanger (May 1905 – 1989) was a painter born in France who later lived in Virginia. Some of his expressionist paintings are in the style of Marc Chagall. Monica Semedo (born 15 June 1984) is a former Luxembourgish TV presenter and politician who served as a Member of the European Parliament after being elected in 2019. Political career In parliament, Semedo has been serving as full member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs and as substitute member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. In 2020, she also joined the Committee on Petitions and the Committee on Culture and Education. Since January 2021 she has not been a member of the Democratic party and is now referred to as an "Independent" renew Europe member. Semedo was suspended from her duties for 15 days and deprived of her parliamentary allowances for the same period for moral harassment of her three parliamentary assistants.
