Gregory Karelin
Grigory Silych Karelin (January 1801 – 17 December 1872) was a Russian explorer and naturalist who travelled around Siberia and central Asia. Many species of plants have been described from specimens that he collected and some named in his honour. Karelin was born in Petersburg district where his father was a music conductor. Orphaned at the age of eight he joined the Cadet Corps, graduating in 1817 as a Second Lieutenant. He wrote some humorous verse on the secretary of war, Count Arakcheev, which led to his being posted in Orenburg on the border of Russia. Here he met Eduard Friedrich Eversmann, E. F. Eversmann and became interested in natural history. He began to collect plants from the Caspian region and sent specimens to other Russian botanists. In 1862, he travelled on the Kirghiz Steppes with Eversmann and in 1829 to the lower Volga along with Christopher Hansteen. Eduard Friedrich Eversmann
Alexander Eduard Friedrich Eversmann (23 January 1794 – 14 April 1860) was a Prussian biologist and explorer. Eversmann was born in Westphalia and studied at the universities of Marburg, Halle, Berlin and Dorpat. He received his degree of Philosophy and Master of Liberal Sciences at Halle in 1814, and at Dorpat graduated as a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery in 1817. During the next three years he travelled in the southern Urals, collecting specimens and sending them to Hinrich Lichtenstein at the university of Berlin. Eversmann had for a long time planned to travel into central Asia to collect natural history specimens. He had studied the languages, customs and Muslim religion of the peoples of the area. In 1820 he set of for Bukhara disguised as a merchant, a journey he described in ''Reise Orenburg nach Buchara'' (1823), with a natural history appendix by Lichtenstein. Christopher Hansteen
Christopher Hansteen (26 September 1784 – 11 April 1873) was a Norwegian geophysicist, astronomer and physicist, best known for his mapping of Earth's magnetic field. Early life and career Hansteen was born in Christiania as the son of Johannes Mathias Hansteen (1744–1792) and his wife Anne Cathrine Treschow (1754–1829). He was the younger brother of writer Conradine Birgitte Dunker, and through her the uncle of Bernhard Dunker and Vilhelmine Ullmann, and granduncle of Mathilde Schjøtt, Ragna Nielsen and Viggo Ullmann. His mother was a first cousin of Niels Treschow. The intention was for Hansteen to become a naval officer, but since his father died when Hansteen was young, this plan did not materialize. Instead, he attended Oslo Cathedral School from the age of nine. Niels Treschow was the principal of this school.
