Greg Hirth
James Gregory "Greg" Hirth (born June 4, 1963) is an American geophysicist, specializing in tectonophysics. He is known for his experiments in rock deformation and his applications of rheology in development of models for tectonophysics. Biography Greg Hirth as a boy and teenager enjoyed the outdoors in the woods of Ohio and the mountains of Colorado. He graduated in 1985 with a B.S. in geological sciences from Indiana University. At Brown University, he graduated in geological sciences with a master's degree in 1987 and a Ph.D. in 1991. His Ph.D. thesis was supervised by Jan Tullis. For the academic year 1991–1992, Hirth was a postdoc in the department of geology and geophysics at the University of Minnesota. There his supervisor was David L. Kohlstedt. Southwest Indian Ridge
The Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) is a mid-ocean ridge located along the floors of the south-west Indian Ocean and south-east Atlantic Ocean. A divergent tectonic plate boundary separating the Somali plate to the north from the Antarctic plate to the south, the SWIR is characterised by ultra-slow spreading rates (only exceeding those of the Gakkel Ridge in the Arctic) combined with a fast lengthening of its axis between the two flanking triple junctions, Rodrigues () in the Indian Ocean and Bouvet () in the Atlantic Ocean. The Mecca Hills are a low mountain range located in Riverside County, southern California, in the United States. The Mecca Hills are in the Colorado Desert section of the Sonoran Desert, adjacent to the Lower Colorado River Valley region. The range lies in an east-west direction, east of the Coachella Valley, west of the Chuckwalla Mountains, and south of Interstate 10. Chiwaukum Mountains
The Chiwaukum Mountains are a north–south mountain range in central Washington, United States. They stretch from Snowgrass Mountain at , to . The mountains are made of schist, part of the Nason terrane. The original rock in the Nason terrane was laid down 210 Myr ago. The terrane then smashed into the western coastline of the continent, and the Mount Stuart batholith intruded into it in the late Cretaceous. The intrusion of the granitic rock metamorphosed the rock into schist. In July 2014, the lightning-caused Chiwaukum Creek Fire burned the east flank of the Chiwaukum Mountains. Cascade Mountains
The Cascade Range or Cascades is a major mountain range of western North America, extending from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon to Northern California. It includes both non-volcanic mountains, such as many of those in the North Cascades, and the notable volcanoes known as the High Cascades.
