Greens Western Australia
The Greens (WA) is a member party of the Australian Greens in Western Australia. The Greens (WA) was formed following the merger of the Western Australian Green Party with the Green Earth Alliance composed of the Vallentine Peace Group and Alternative Coalition in 1990. The Party became officially affiliated with the Australian Greens in 2003. There are currently four Greens members in the state legislative council: Brad Pettitt, Tim Clifford, Jess Beckerling and Sophie McNeill. The party is also represented federally in the senate by Jordon Steele-John. Jordon Steele-John
Jordon Alexander Steele-John (born 14 October 1994) is a British-born Australian politician and disability rights advocate. He is a Senator for Western Australia and a member of the Australian Greens. He began his political career in 2013, and was elected by declaration to the Senate in 2017. Steele-John holds the portfolios of Health, Disability Rights and Services, Foreign Affairs and Peace & Nuclear Disarmament for the Australian Greens. Over his time as a Senator, Steele-John has used his position in Parliament to spearhead the Disability Royal Commission, launch Senate inquiries into dental care and ADHD assessment and support, fight for climate action, and bring the rights of young people, queer people, and disabled people to the forefront of political discourse. Australian Democrats
The Australian Democrats is a centrist political party in Australia. Founded in 1977 from a merger of the Australia Party and the New Liberal Movement, both of which were descended from Liberal Party splinter groups, it was Australia's largest minor party from its formation in 1977 through to 2004 and frequently held the balance of power in the Senate during that time. The Democrats' inaugural leader was Don Chipp, a former Liberal cabinet minister, who famously promised to "keep the bastards honest". At the 1977 federal election, the Democrats polled 11.1 percent of the Senate vote and secured two seats. The party would retain a presence in the Senate for the next 30 years, winning seats in all six states and at its peak (between 1999 and 2002) holding nine out of 76 seats, though never securing a seat in the lower house. Dee Margetts
Diane Elizabeth "Dee" Margetts (born 5 March 1955) is a former Australian politician. She was a member of the Australian Senate from 1993 to 1999 and a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 2001 to 2005, representing the Greens (WA). Early life Margetts was born on 5 March 1955 in Fremantle, Western Australia. She is the daughter of June Elaine and Ernest Joseph Margetts. Margetts attended John Curtin Senior High School, graduating in 1972. She went on to the University of Western Australia, beginning an arts degree and majoring in anthropology and English. While at university she worked part-time as a sales agent with Qantas. In 1979, Margetts moved to England and enrolled in development studies at the University of East Anglia. Christabel Marguerite Alain Chamarette, sometimes known as Christabel Bridge (born 1 May 1948) is a former Greens Senator for Western Australia from 1992 to 1996. Personal life Born in Hyderabad, India in 1948, Chamarette is of Anglo-Indian and French Huguenot ancestry. She has worked as a community worker in Bangladesh and later as a clinical psychologist at Fremantle Prison. Politics Chamarette was appointed to the Senate in 1992, following the resignation of Jo Vallentine. She was opposed to privatising Telstra and delayed the Mabo legislation by demanding the inclusion of mineral rights in the compensation package for native title holders. She was defeated at the 1996 general election; her term ended on 30 June 1996. Christine "Chrissy" Sharp (18 November 1947 – 18 May 2021) was an Australian politician, environmentalist, and journalist. She was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council for the Greens Western Australia from 1997 to 2005, representing the South West Region. Early life Christine Sharp was born on 18 November 1947 in London, England. She completed a Bachelor of Arts with Honours at the University of Sheffield and a Master of Arts in Political Science at the University of Kent. Franklin River
The Franklin River is a major perennial river located in the Central Highlands (Tasmania), Central Highlands and Western Tasmania, western regions of Tasmania, Australia. The river is located in the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park at the mid northern area of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Its source is situated at the western edge of the Central Highlands and it flows west towards the West Coast. The river is named in honour of Sir John Franklin, a Governor of Tasmania, who later died searching for the Northwest Passage. Franklin Dam
The Gordon-below-Franklin Dam (or simply Franklin Dam) project was a proposed dam on the Gordon River in Tasmania, Australia, that was never constructed. The movement that eventually led to the project's cancellation became one of the most significant environmental campaigns in Australian history. The dam was proposed for the purpose of generating hydroelectricity. The resulting new electricity generation capacity would have been . The proposed construction would have subsequently impacted upon the environmentally sensitive Franklin River, which joins with the Gordon river nearby. Campaign To Save Native Forests
The Campaign to Save Native Forests (W.A.) (CSNF) was the name of a grassroots organisation which grew from a campaign started in Perth, Western Australia, in 1975, as a response to the development of a woodchipping industry in the south-west jarrah and karri forests of Western Australia. The Manjimup woodchip project aroused significant levels of protest in Perth and the South West region out of public concern that inadequate measures had been made for conservation alongside exploitation of the south west hardwood forests. The public figures and faces of the CSNF at the time—Beth Schulz, Basil Schur, and Neil Bartholomaeus—each gained extensive coverage on the local media during public rallies at Wagerup and elsewhere. Down To Earth Co-operative
ConFest is an alternative bush campout festival held in the south-eastern states of Australia annually during and around Easter. The name 'ConFest' is a concatenation of the words Conference and Festival. ConFest was initiated in 1976, and organised by the former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, Dr. Jim Cairns, his private secretary Junie Morosi and David Ditchburn. It was and is intended to bring together the various subcultures of the alternative movement, and was billed as "An Exploration of Alternatives". The event has been run almost continuously by the same cooperative society; The Down To Earth Co-op (DTE), based in Victoria. ConFest now hosts some 7000 participants annually for a 5-day festival over the Australia's Easter long weekend.
