Green Party (Georgia)
The Greens Party of Georgia () is a political party in Georgia. It is led by Giorgi Gachechiladze. Its success has varied - having 11 out of 235 members of parliament in 1992 and having been part of the governing coalition in 1995. When it stood independently in 1999 it only received 0.55% of the vote. It stood as part of Eduard Shevardnadze's coalition in the annulled 2003 elections. In 2012, the party joined the Georgian Dream coalition, electing a single MP in the 2012 election and in the 2016 election, but left the coalition before the 2020 parliamentary election. The party is a member of the European Green Party and of the Global Greens. Union of Citizens of Georgia (UCG; ka, საქართველოს მოქალაქეთა კავშირი, tr), also known as the Citizens' Union of Georgia or Georgian Citizens' Union, was the ruling party of Georgia from 1995 to 2001. It was established by the president Eduard Shevardnadze, who had previously served as the Communist leader of the Georgian SSR from 1972 to 1985, and David Chantladze, former General Trade Representative of the Soviet Union to Czechoslovakia. Shevardnadze led the party to victory in the 1995 and 1999 parliamentary elections, however the party began to collapse in 2001 and was disbanded soon after Shevardnadze's removal from power in the aftermath of the Rose Revolution, which occurred following the 2003 parliamentary election which was widely seen as being rigged. 2020 Georgian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Georgia (country), Georgia on 31 October and 21 November 2020 to elect the 150 members of Parliament of Georgia, Parliament. The ruling Georgian Dream, Georgian Dream party led by Prime Minister of Georgia, Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia won re-election for a third term in office, making it the first party in Georgian history to do so. The elections also saw a record number of opposition parties elected to parliament. The opposition boycotted the second round of the elections and called on voters to abstain; turnout in the second round was subsequently only 26%.
