Greek Basketball League System
The Greek basketball league system is a number of interconnected competitions for professional basketball clubs in Greece. The system has a hierarchical format with a promotion and relegation system between competitions at different levels. There are nine different competition levels in the system. The highest level competitions are the professional and semi professional nationwide competitions, which include the top-tier level Greek Basketball League (GBL), the second-tier level Greek A2 Basketball League, the third-tier level Greek B Basketball League, and the fourth-tier level Greek C Basketball League. Those competitions are then followed by the regional amateur level competitions, which include: the A1, the A2, the B, the C, and/or the C1, and the C2 categories. Hellenic Basketball Association
The Hellenic Basketball Association (HEBA), is a governing body for the sport of basketball in Greece. In Greek, it is officially known as the Ελληνικός Σύνδεσμος Ανωνύμων Καλαθοσφαιρικών Εταιρειών (ΕΣΑΚΕ) ( LA: Ellinikós Sýndesmos Anonýmon Kalathosfairikón Etaireión (ESAKE)), which means, the ''Hellenic Association of Limited Basketball Companies'' in English. The HEBA organizes and directs the Greek Basketball League (GBL), which is Greece's top-tier level professional competition of basketball, that is contested by sports clubs. HEBA has been in charge of the top-tier level professional club basketball league in Greece, since the 1992–93 basketball season, when it took over those duties from the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK). European Professional Club Basketball System
Professional men's basketball clubs in Europe can compete in a number of different competitions, including national leagues, regional (multi-national) leagues, and continental competitions. It is therefore possible for clubs from some countries to take part in several levels of competition in the same season. Clubs usually qualify for European competitions through performance in their national or regional leagues, with the exception of wild cards. Continental competitions There are currently four competitions which are branded as Europe-wide, two controlled by Euroleague Basketball, and two by FIBA Europe.
