Great Swamp Watershed Association
The Great Swamp Watershed Association is a member-based, non-profit, 501(c)(3) conservation organization dedicated to preserving and protecting water and natural areas. Their programs serve all who live, work, or play in the Great Swamp watershed in Morris County, New Jersey. For over 40 years the association has been acting on behalf of local communities to ensure that water is safe and pure and open space is protected. The Great Swamp watershed offers residents and visitors nearly of unique and beautiful landscape at the edge of urban and suburban development. Five streams in the watershed form the Passaic River, which provides potable water for over a million New Jersey residents. Stream
A stream is a continuous body of surface water flowing within the bed and banks of a channel. Jockey Hollow
Jockey Hollow is the name for an area in southern Morris County, New Jersey farmed in the 18th century by the Wick, Guerin and Kemble families. The origin of the name is still uncertain, but was used as such at the time of the American Revolution. For most of the Revolutionary War, it was used by portions of Continental Army as a winter camp site, and it housed the main Continental Army during the "Hard Winter" of 1779-80, believed to be the harshest winter in recorded history. Loantaka Brook Reservation
The Loantaka Brook Reservation is a nature reserve and public park in the American state of New Jersey in Morris County. It consists of five miles of nature trails for jogging, hiking, and biking. Seaton Hackney Stables, owned and operated by the Morris County Park Commission, offers horseback riding at an adjacent property with trail riding along a long and narrow corridor near the Loantaka Brook. Passaic River
Passaic River ( ) is a river, approximately long, in Northern New Jersey. The river in its upper course flows in a highly circuitous route, meandering through the swamp lowlands between the ridge hills of rural and suburban northern New Jersey, called the Great Swamp, draining much of the northern portion of the state through its tributaries. In its lower portion, it flows through the most urbanized and industrialized areas of the state, including along downtown Newark. The lower river suffered from severe pollution and industrial abandonment in the 20th century.
