Alexandra Park, Auckland
Alexandra Park is a racecourse in the suburb of Epsom in Auckland, New Zealand. It is the home of the Auckland Trotting Club . The park consists of the Alexandra Park Raceway trotting track, conference centre and a high-end urban village currently under construction. Alexandra Park hosts many feature harness races throughout the year, including the Auckland Trotting Cup and the Rowe Cup, and is the home of the New Zealand Trotting Hall of Fame and museum. History Named after Queen Alexandra this is believed to be the site of Auckland's first organised racing in 1842. Part of William Potter's large farm it was known as Potter's Paddock. Bought for their draught horses by the tramways company in 1887 it was, by agreement, still used for football, Rugby and cricket matches. Regular Auckland Trotting Club meetings began in 1890. Monkey King (horse)
Monkey King is a leading New Zealand Standardbred racehorse. He is most noted for winning the New Zealand Trotting Cup and New Zealand Free-For-All double in two consecutive years, in 2009 and 2010, the first time this has ever been achieved. He also won the Miracle Mile Pace and the Auckland Trotting Cup in the 2009/10 season, as well as running second in the Inter Dominion Grand Final. As a result, he achieved the highest-earning season ever by a New Zealand pacer, and was crowned New Zealand Horse of the Year. These victories came after several top successes as a 3 and 4 year-old and consistently rating among the top horses in New Zealand over the following years. He was inducted to the Addington Harness Hall of Fame in 2019. He was at the time New Zealand's richest ever pacer with over $3,400,000 in stakes. F Holmes
Freeman Wright Holmes (6 June 1871–21 February 1967), better known as Free Holmes was a New Zealand jockey, horse driver, trainer and breeder. He was born in Ashburton, South Canterbury, New Zealand on 6 June 1871. He was known as "The Grand Old Man of Trotting". He is notable for being both a champion driver and formerly a champion jockey. He won a unique double of the New Zealand Cup in 1888 for thoroughbreds, at Riccarton, riding Manton, and in 1919 driving Trix Pointer to win the NZ Trotting Cup at the Addington Raceway. As a jockey, he also won the 1894 Grand National Hurdles and 1895 Great Northern Hurdles and Great Northern Steeplechase with Liberator. He also won two Auckland Trotting Cups. Indianapolis (horse)
Indianapolis was a New Zealand bred Standardbred racehorse. He is notable in that he won three New Zealand Trotting Cup races, the richest harness race, and sometimes the richest horse race in New Zealand. Indianapolis is one of three horses to win the NZ Trotting Cup three times, the others being False Step and Terror to Love. He held the world record for a three-year-old, a record which stood for 14 years. He was a brother to Tondeleyo (a notable taproot dam) and Miraculous (contested two Inter Dominion heats, sire) and was a half-brother to the sire, Red Raider.Classic Families

Johnny Globe
Johnny Globe was an outstanding New Zealand bred Standardbred pacer that held four world records. He is notable in that he won the New Zealand Trotting Cup. Johnny Globe is also notable in winning 15 free for all pacing events, which at the time was a record. He was also a leading New Zealand sire on four occasions. Johnny Globe was by Logan Derby, who was very successful harness racer in Australia. His dam, Sandfast, was by Sandydale (USA) from the American pacing mare Slapfast, a yearling record-holder in the States in her day, and who was imported to the New Zealand by Sir John McKenzie. Don Nyhan purchased Johnny Globe from the horse's breeder, Mr F E Ward as a small 10-month-old foal for £50 for his wife, Doris. Nyhan had trained his dam Sandfast for Ward, and knew she had ability after a time trial over a mile in 2.10 at Hutt Park as a two-year-old. Doody Townley
David James "Doody" Townley (29 June 1925 – 28 March 1999) was a trainer and driver of Standardbred racehorses in New Zealand. He was associated with many top class horses and was a leading driver of harness horses in New Zealand. He is notable for winning four Inter Dominion Championships, the premier trotting series of races between Australia and New Zealand. Not surprisingly, he is also an inductee in the Inter Dominion Hall of Fame. Doody also won two Auckland Trotting Cups and the New Zealand Trotting Cup. These are the two top races in New Zealand. Townley died in Ashburton on 28 March 1999, and his ashes were buried at Ashburton Cemetery. M F Holmes
Maurice Francis Tancred Holmes (10 November 1908 – 7 July 1998), commonly known as Morrie Holmes, was a driver of standardbred racehorses in New Zealand. He was associated with many champions and was a leading driver of harness horses in New Zealand. His father Free Holmes was also a driving legend. Owing to his skill, Holmes was known as "the Maestro". As at 1998, he was the most successful reinsman in the history of trotting of New Zealand dating back to the 1860s. He drove 1666 winners and amassed $2,054,555 in stake money over 49 years. His long career lasted from 1925 to 1974, and a career spanning 44 years at the top. On his last night at the Alexandra Park Raceway, he drove four winners from eight starters. Peter Wolfenden
Peter Tom Wolfenden (24 January 1935 – 18 February 2023) was a New Zealand driver and trainer of Standardbred racehorses. He won the New Zealand drivers' premiership 14 times, including eight consecutive years from 1974, and twice won the Australasian Drivers Championship. He represented New Zealand seven times in the World Drivers Championship in harness racing, placing second in 1977 and third in 1971. He had 1762 career race wins in New Zealand as a driver, and 798 as a trainer. One of his most notable wins was in the 1963 New Zealand Trotting Cup, when he trained and drove New Zealand's top pacer Cardigan Bay. In the 1982 New Year Honours, Wolfenden was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), for services to trotting. He was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame. Christopher Vance
Christopher Vance (5 November 1986 – 13 December 2016) was a Group One-winning New Zealand Standardbred racehorse, trained by Roy and Barry Purdon and generally driven by Barry Purdon or Tony Herlihy. Racing career He was the 1991–92 New Zealand Horse of the Year after winning both the major New Zealand races, the New Zealand Cup and Auckland Cup, as well as the Miracle Mile Pace at Harold Park in Australia. Il Vicolo
Il Vicolo (foaled 27 October 1991) was a New Zealand Standardbred racehorse. He is notable for winning the richest harness horse race in New Zealand, the New Zealand Trotting Cup, twice. As 1995 Harness Horse of the Year, he featured on a New Zealand postage stamp. Il Vicolo had already had some memorable victories to his credit including the New Zealand Derby-Great Northern Derby double and the New South Wales Derby.
