Great Montana Collection
The Great Montana Collection is a collection of coins which was amassed by American businessman Zollie Kelman in Great Falls, Montana. Kelman owned a business that leased games to taverns. He was able to collect many coins by sorting the coins and saving the ones with high silver content. In his collection he had amassed 60,000 silver dollars and 6000 Silver certificate (United States), Black Eagle dollar bills. History Zollie Kelman was a business man who lived in Great Falls, Montana. He was known to keep roughly 60,000 silver dollars in his home. He was able to empty out his gaming machines and he segregated and saved the silver coins. He involved his family in the sorting and they also became coin collectors. Zollie Kelman
Zollie Kelman ( 1926–June 23, 2008) was an American businessman who operated gaming machines in Great Falls, Montana. He founded the American Music Company in the 1940s. He was a coin collector and his coin collection became known as the Great Montana Collection. Background Zollie Kelman was born 1926. His parents were Jewish Russian immigrants and Zollie was born and raised in Minnesota. Kelman attended school until the 10th grade when he left to begin work. He had one brother named Sidney who was born in Poland in 1922. Sidney began working with Zollie in 1953. Career Zollie Kelman started a family-owned business known as the Great Falls' American Music Company. The business was started in the 1940s and grew to have 700 games in 61 businesses. The company leased, pinball machines, amusement and jukeboxes games to taverns. Great Falls is the third most populous city in the U.S. state of Montana and the county seat of Cascade County. The population was 60,442 according to the 2020 census. Silver certificates are a type of representative money issued between 1878 and 1964 in the United States as part of its circulation of paper currency. They were produced in response to silver agitation by citizens who were angered by the Fourth Coinage Act, which had effectively placed the United States on a gold standard.Leavens, p. 24.
