Great Fish River
The Great Fish River (called ''great'' to distinguish it from the Namibian Fish River) () is a river running through the South African province of the Eastern Cape. The coastal area between Port Elizabeth and the Fish River mouth is known as the '' Sunshine Coast''. The Great Fish River was originally named ''Rio do Infante'', after João Infante, the captain of one of the caravels of Bartolomeu Dias. Infante visited the river in the late 1480s. The name Great Fish is a misnomer, since it is a translation of the Dutch Groot Visch Rivier, which was the name of a tributary in the vicinity of Cradock, which at its confluence with the Little Fish (Klein Visch Rivier) forms what is properly called the (Eastern Cape) Fish River. Great Fish River Nature Reserve
Great Fish River Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa that is managed by Eastern Cape Parks. The park has a total area of 45,000 ha, and has been operational since 1994. It comprises three historical nature reserves that have been combined into a single reserve: * Andries Vosloo Kudu Reserve * Double Drift Nature Reserve * Sam Knott Nature Reserve The reserves are linked by a circular route, and the Great Fish River runs through the park. The elevation of the reserve varies from 95 meters to 561 meters above sea level, characterized predominantly by sharp cliffs descending into river valleys and fragmented ridges between basins. The majority of the reserve is composed of the Great Fish subtropical thicket. Cookhouse (village)
Cookhouse () is a small village located in Eastern Cape province, South Africa, some north of Port Elizabeth and east of Somerset East, on the west bank of the Great Fish River. Cookhouse is part of the Blue Crane Route Municipality, situated in Sarah Baartman District, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Cookhouse was an early colonial settlement. The Scottish abolitionist and poet, Thomas Pringle mentions Cookhouse in his journal. The town was also visited by early explorers and writers such as Dutch military commander Robert Jacob Gordon and French traveller François Levaillant. Gordon's stay in South Africa produced scientific writings, drawings and maps about the region. The town is home to the Cookhouse Wind Farm which comprises 66 turbines. Encephalartos Altensteinii
''Encephalartos altensteinii'' is a species of palm-like cycad in the family Zamiaceae. It is endemic to South Africa. The species name ''altensteinii'' commemorates Altenstein, a 19th-century German chancellor and patron of science. It is commonly known as the breadtree, broodboom, Eastern Cape giant cycad or uJobane ( Zulu).Palmer, E. and Pitman, N. ''Trees of Southern Africa''. Cape Town (1972). It is listed as vulnerable due to habitat destruction, use for traditional medicine and removal by collectors. Description This cycad grows up to tall and may be branched or unbranched. Fynbos
Fynbos (; , ) is a small belt of natural shrubland or heathland vegetation located in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa. The area is predominantly coastal and mountainous, with a Mediterranean climate. The fynbos ecoregion is within the Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub biome. In fields related to biogeography, fynbos is known for its exceptional degree of biodiversity and endemism, consisting of about 80% (8,500 fynbos) species of the Cape floral kingdom, where nearly 6,000 of them are endemic. The area continues to face severe human-caused threats, but due to the many economic uses of the fynbos, conservation efforts are being made to help restore it. The Gariep Dam is located in South Africa, near the town of Norvalspont, bordering the Free State and Eastern Cape provinces. Orange–Fish River Tunnel
The Orange–Fish Tunnel, constructed between 1966 and 1975, is an long irrigation tunnel in central South Africa, built to divert water from the Orange River to the Fish River valley. It is the longest continuous enclosed aqueduct in the southern hemisphere. Purpose For many years, large areas in the Eastern Cape experienced severe water shortages because of little rainfall in the arid Karoo. The situation was aggravated by the reduction in capacity of many of the existing dams due to heavy silt deposits. The project to alleviate this situation comprised two interdependent engineering schemes — neither of which was of any use without the other. First, a dam had to be built across the Orange River, then a tunnel had to be driven to take the water across the watershed into a further river system. Water Management Area
Water Management Areas (WMAs) are parts of South Africa that are managed by Catchment Management Agencies (CMAs). A CMA is established in terms of the National Water Act of 1998. (As of December 2020 only two CMAs have been established). The list should be complete, and in accordance with the definitions of the Department of Water Affairs. Apart from these WMAs they also have a number of Water Drainage Areas (some dams are only used for drainage, some seem to be used for both).
