The Great Falls Americans were a junior ice hockey team based in Great Falls, Montana playing in the American Frontier Hockey League and the America West Hockey League from 1995 to 2003. They played at the Four Seasons Arena. The team won the league championship in 2000-2001. Notable players during the 2000-2001 AWHL hockey season include Pat Dwyer, Bobby Robins, Jon Volp, and David Printz. Great Falls, Montana
Great Falls is the third most populous city in the U.S. state of Montana and the county seat of Cascade County. The population was 60,442 according to the 2020 census. The city covers an area of and is the principal city of the Great Falls, Montana, Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Cascade County. American Frontier Hockey League
The America West Hockey League (AWHL) was a Tier II Junior A ice hockey league. The AWHL was formed in 1992 to offer junior ice hockey to the Rocky Mountain region of USA Hockey. It originally was called the American Frontier Hockey League (AFHL), and the name change to AWHL came in 1998. The AWHL merged with the North American Hockey League in 2003 and after the merger, the NAHL name was kept. In the Summer of 2011, a new league called the American West Hockey League was formed in the same region as the former AWHL operating as a Tier III league. The new AWHL featured 6 teams, including the former AWHL teams Billings Bulls, Bozeman Icedogs, Great Falls Americans, and Helena Bighorns. Four Seasons Arena
The Four Seasons Arena is a multi-purpose indoor sports and exhibition arena located in the city of Great Falls, Montana, in the United States. Constructed in 1979, it served primarily as an ice rink until 2005. The failure of the practice rink's refrigeration system in 2003 and the management's decision to close the main rink in 2006 led to the facility's reconfiguration as an indoor sports and exhibition space. In November 2018, the Cascade County Commission, in conjunction with the Great Falls TIBD, and the Great Falls Lodging Association began to develop a plan to replace the arena. At a cost of 86 million dollars, the proposed arena will seat between 10,000 and 12,000 people. The bond is expected to go before voters in November 2019. As of May 2011 it is the largest exhibition, music, and sports venue in the city. Junior hockey is a level of competitive ice hockey generally for players between 16 and 21 years of age. Junior hockey leagues in the United States and Canada are considered amateur (with some exceptions) and operate within regions of each country. Patrick Dwyer (ice Hockey)
Patrick "Pat" Dwyer (born June 22, 1983) is an American former professional ice hockey right winger who played in the National Hockey League with the Carolina Hurricanes. He was originally selected by the Atlanta Thrashers in the fourth round, 116th overall, of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently an assistant coach for the Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League. Playing career After 9 seasons within the Carolina Hurricanes organization, Dwyer left the club having played in 416 regular season games as a free agent. Dwyer was unable to attain an NHL contract over the summer and on September 19, 2015, accepted a try-out offer to attend the Arizona Coyotes training camp. Bobby Robins
Robert Raymond Robins (born October 17, 1981) is a former American professional ice hockey forward. He played for the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League (NHL). Playing career Robins spent four seasons of Division 1 collegiate hockey at the University of Massachusetts Lowell before signing an NHL contract with the Ottawa Senators in 2006. He was assigned to the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League and spent two seasons there. He then was assigned to the ECHL with the Elmira Jackals and also had short spells with the Rochester Americans, Albany River Rats and the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League. David Printz
David Printz (born July 24, 1980 in Solna, Sweden) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey defenseman, who last played for Frölunda HC of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). Playing career Printz is a product of the AIK youth system. He moved to the US for the 2000-01 season, joining AWHL side Great Falls Americans. Back in his native Sweden, he played in 37 games for his hometown side AIK in the 2001-02 SHL season, before moving to Finland for the following campaign, splitting the season between Liiga clubs HPK and Ilves. In 2003-04, he returned to AIK, then playing in Sweden's second-tier league, the Allsvenskan. Drafted 225th overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers, Printz came to North America prior to the 2004–05 AHL season. Rikard Grönborg
Rikard Grönborg (born 8 June 1968) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey defenceman. He coached the ZSC Lions until end of december 2022. As Head Coach, he led Team Sweden to the gold medal at the 2017 IIHF World Championship. He played college hockey at St. Cloud State University before returning to Sweden to play two years of professional hockey. He started his coaching career in 1994 as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Billings Bulls
The Billings Bulls were a junior ice hockey organization based in Billings, Montana. They most recently played home games at the 550-seat Centennial Ice Arena and due to the arena's small size, the Bulls frequently sold out games. They previously played their home games in the Metrapark which had a max capacity of 9,000 for hockey games. However, a negotiating dispute with arena officials and local county commissioners resulted in the team losing its lease.
