Graphosoma Italicum
''Graphosoma italicum'' is a species of shield bug in the family Pentatomidae. It is also known as the Striped bug (or Italian striped bug) and Minstrel bug. Description ''G. italicum'' can reach a length of . The body is almost round, with a large shield. The basic color of the upperside of the body is red, with wide black longitudinal stripes. The pronotum has six black bands. The antennae are black. Also the sides of the abdominal segments (connexivum) are red with many small black spots. The legs are mostly black, which distinguishes it from its relative, '' G. lineatum''. Taxonomy ''Graphosoma italicum'' had been regarded as either a subspecies, or a synonym, of ''G. lineatum'' for over 100 years, so nearly all of the existing literature prior to 2007 referred to this species under the name ''lineatum''. The validity of ''G. italicum'' was reestablished via DNA analysis, which demonstrated that the sister species to ''G. italicum'' is '' G. rubrolineatum'', while ''G. lin ... François-Louis Laporte, Comte De Castelnau
François-Louis Nompar de Caumont Laporte, comte de Castelnau (born ''François-Louis Nompar de Caumont La Force''; 24 December 1802 – 4 February 1880) was a French naturalist, known also as François Laporte or Francis de Castelnau. The standard author abbreviation Castelnau is used to indicate him when citing a botanical name and zoological names other than insects. Laporte is typically used when citing an insect name, or Laporte de Castelnau. Life Born in London, Castelnau studied natural history in Paris. From 1837 to 1841 he traveled in the United States, Texas, and Canada. He visited Middle Florida from November 1837 until March 1838, publishing "Essai sur la Floride du Milieu" in 1843. In Canada he studied the fauna of the Canadian lakes and the river systems of Upper and Lower Canada (roughly corresponding to the modern provinces of Ontario and Quebec) and of the United States. Pentatomidae
Pentatomidae is a family of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera, generally called shield bugs or stink bugs. Pentatomidae is the largest family in the superfamily Pentatomoidea, and contains around 900 genera and over 4700 species.Robert G. Foottit, Peter H. Adler ''Insect Biodiversity: Science and Society'', John Wiley and Sons, 2009, As hemipterans, the pentatomids have piercing sucking mouthparts, and most are phytophagous, including several species which are severe pests on agricultural crops. However, some species, particularly in the subfamily Asopinae, are predatory and may be considered beneficial. Etymology The name "Pentatomidae" is from the Greek ''pente'' meaning "five" and ''tomos'' meaning "section", and refers to the five segments of their antennae. Pentatomids are generally called "shield bugs" in British English, or "stink bugs" in American English. However, the term shield bugs is also applied broadly to include several related families (e.g. Acant ... ''Graphosoma semipunctatum'' is a species of true bug living exclusively in the Mediterranean region. The form living on the island of Crete has sometimes been given the name ''G. creticum''. It is very close to ''Graphosoma italicum''. It can be distinguished from ''G. italicum'' by black dots along the pronotum instead of lines, and the mostly orange legs. They are found abundantly on plants in the family Apiaceae Apiaceae or Umbelliferae is a family of mostly aromatic flowering plants named after the type genus '' Apium'' and commonly known as the celery, carrot or parsley family, or simply as umbellifers.
