Grant MacEwan
John Walter Grant MacEwan (August 12, 1902 – June 15, 2000) was a Canadian farmer, professor at the University of Saskatchewan, dean (education), Dean of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba, the 28th Mayor of Calgary and both a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and the List of lieutenant governors of Alberta, ninth Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Canada. MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta, and the MacEwan Student Centre at the University of Calgary as well as the neighbourhoods of MacEwan Glen in Calgary and MacEwan, Edmonton, MacEwan in Edmonton are named after him. Roots MacEwan's grandparents were Scottish Highlands, Highland Scottish. George MacEwen (Grant MacEwan changed his name to "MacEwan" with an "a" sometime in the 1920s), his paternal grandfather, came from Stirling, Scotland, to farm in Guelph, Ontario, and married Annie Cowan, another Scot. The Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) originated at the agricultural laboratories of the Toronto Normal School, and was officially founded in 1874 as an associate agricultural college of the University of Toronto. John Clifford Leslie (June 15, 1920 – December 27, 2010) was a Canadian politician and businessman and the first native-born Calgarian elected as mayor of the city. Born in Calgary, Jack Leslie received his primary and secondary school education in Calgary and attended the University of Alberta. With the outbreak of war, he left his studies in Edmonton and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He saw four years service as a pilot. Following the war, he obtained his A.A.C.I. degree from the Appraisal Institute of Canada and began to pursue a career in real estate. Harry Hays
Harry William Hays (25 December 1909 – 4 May 1982) was a Canadian politician, 27th Mayor of Calgary, Cabinet minister in the government of Lester B. Pearson, and Senator from Alberta. Personal life Born in Carstairs, Alberta, to a family originally from Missouri, Hays had several careers related to agriculture. He was an auctioneer, rancher and breeder as well as a radio broadcaster. He was a founding member and president of the Alberta Poultry Breeders' Association and also served as president of the Alberta Holstein Breeders' Association. He led the Canadian Swine Breeders during World War II when it initiated the "Bacon for Britain" campaign of increased production as part of the war effort. Calgary was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return one to six members to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1905 to 1913, and again from 1921 to 1959.
