Granit Oak
The Granit oak (in ) is a pedunculate oak (''Quercus robur'') tree that grows within the boundaries of Granit village, Bulgaria. The oak measures in diameter and in girth at waist level and reaches in height, but only eastern side branches remain alive. In March 1982 samples were taken with a pressler drill, from which it was estimated that the tree was 1637 years old. With an estimated germination date of 345 AD, it is the oldest tree in Bulgaria and one of the oldest in Europe. Pedunculate Oak
''Quercus robur'', the pedunculate oak, is a species of flowering plant in the beech and oak family, Fagaceae. It is a large tree, native to most of Europe and western Asia, and is widely cultivated in other temperate regions. It grows on soils of near neutral acidity in the lowlands and is notable for its value to natural ecosystems, supporting a very wide diversity of herbivorous insects and other pests, predators and pathogens. Description Pedunculate oak is a deciduous tree up to tall, with a single stout trunk that can be as much as in girth (circumference at breast height) or even 14 m in pollarded specimens. Older trees tend to be pollarded, with boles (the main trunk) about 3 m long. They often live longer and become more stout than unpollarded trees. Granit, Bulgaria
Granit (in Bulgarian: Гранит) is a village in southern Bulgaria, Bratya Daskalovi municipality, Stara Zagora Province. The village is famous for the oldest tree in Bulgaria and one of the most ancient in the world, the Granit Oak (Quercus robur), estimated to be about 1,700 years old. It was formed in 1945 upon the merger of two villages, Golobradovo and Skobelovo. In 1989 its population was 1103, while this number declined to 665 in December 2017.
